Leo Carrillo, born August 6, 1880 in Los Angeles, California - died September 10, 1961 in Santa Monica, California, was an actor and conservationist.
As a result of his service to the State, the Leo Carrillo State Park, west of Malibu on the Pacific Coast Highway, was named in his honor, And the city of Westminster, California named an elementary school for him.
Leo Carrillo died of cancer in 1961 and was interred in the Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Santa Monica.

Leo Carrillo's great-great-grandfather, José Raimundo Carrillo was one of these early adventurers who in 1769 rode with Father Junipero Serra one thousand miles north to San Diego from Baja California to begin a new life for himself and generations of Carrillos yet to be born.
Carrillo took pride in his family's role in California's development, and in his later years he would promote this history in speeches he gave as the guest of honor at fund raising dinners, parades, and a wide variety of promotional events.
Leo Carrillo was buried in Santa Monica at the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Through comedy, Leo Carrillo and Duncan Renaldo brought dignity and the pursuit of high ideals to the Latin image in the first non-violent western TV series--the targets were never other human beings but the shortcomings of humanity.
In 1942 Carrillo was considered as a possible candidate for Governor of California, but he persuaded his good friend Earl Warren to run, and both men stumped the state and brought Earl Warren, later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Justice (1969-1986), to the Governor’s office.
In 1976, Carrillo’s daughter, Antoinette, sold the remaining acres and 10 ½ acres containing the historic buildings were deeded to the City of Carlsbad for park purposes.
