 Delibes, Leo - Musical Biographies
The audience preferred the music of Delibes to that of Minkous, with whom he had been associated as a favor, and Delibes was finally intrusted with the setting of an entire ballet, "Coppelia," which proved one of his greatest works.
It was truly remarked by contemporaneous critics that Delibes had been almost the first to write ballet music which, while it fitted the stage situation exactly and gave the dancers the most agreeable opportunities, also stood by itself on the concert platform.
In 1881, on the death of Henri Reber, Delibes became professor of composition at the Conservatoire, and in 1884 a member of the Académie.
