Topic: Leo Gorcey

Leo Gorcey - Biography - Moviefone
The elder Gorcey encouraged Leo to audition as one of the tough street gang in the 1935 stage production of Sidney Kingsley's Dead End, which Leo did reluctantly; he was content with his apprentice job at his uncle's plumbing shop.
Gorcey assumed the leading role of Muggs McGuiness, and by the time the series had run its course after 22 pictures in 1945, he'd been joined by his old Dead End buddies Huntz Hall, Bobby Jordan and Gabe Dell.
Gorcey stayed with the series until the 1955 death of his father Bernard, who'd been cast in the supporting role of gullible sweet-shop proprietor Louie Dumbrowski in most of the films.

Leo Gorcey began to drink heavily after the death of his father, Bernard Gorcey, in late 1955.
The chemistry that worked so well between Gorcey and Hall never materialized with Clements and this, along with the fact that the "Boys" were now well into their 30's and the lack of demand for programmer type films such as these due to TV, proved to be the death knell of the series.

Red Bluff Daily News Online - Gorcey bigger than life
Leo Bernard Gorcey was also a wife-beater (particularly his first three, perhaps not so much his last two) who physically abused two of his three children and who was drunk most of his life.
It was a far, far distant and different life for Leo, who was born in New York, went to Hollywood while still in his teens, then opted for what for many would have been an idyllic life on a bend of the state's biggest river.
After that, Gorcey was seldom seen in the movies, but caught the eye of many of his long-time fans when he appeared in the 1965 comedy, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," where he had a cameo appearance as a cab driver.
