Leo Panitch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leo Panitch (born May 3, 1945 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) is professor of political science at York University, in Toronto, Ontario.
Panitch has also argued that Marx was wrong to contend that the rise of trade unions would develop a socialistic class-consciousness in the working class.
Leo Panitch is a Distinguished Research Professor, renowned political economist, Marxist theorist and editor of the Socialist Register.

A reply to Leo Panitch on the relevancy of the term imperialism
Panitch edits "Socialist Register", a yearly journal that was launched by the late Ralph Miliband and John Saville in 1964.
Although Panitch appears to come from a more classical Marxist outlook than many other figures on the academic left, he shares with Immanuel Wallerstein and Hardt-Negri the belief that proletarian revolution is an outmoded concept.
Panitch says that imperialism might have been a useful concept in the Victorian era when North-South ties were decisive but not when you find a preponderance of commercial and military interpenetration in the G8 nations through various trade agreements, bilateral investments and partnerships in NATO.

Panitch has been examining the role the US has occupied since the end of the 20th century in creating and managing a new capitalist world order, looking at the rise of finance as the leading authority in global capitalism, and the interdependency of global financial markets with the US Treasury and Federal Reserve.
Panitch is tracing how the US arrived at a strategy for dealing with the economic crisis of the 1970s, then re-established the vitality of American capital, asserting its international dominance by encouraging the economic restructuring of other states and coordinating the management of global capitalism.
Panitch's project will also contribute a theoretical innovation, since the Marxist "historical materialist" approach on which his analysis is based must be revised for his study to be realized.

Theory, Democracy and the Left: An Interview with Leo Panitch By Carlos Pessoa   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The challenge for the Left becomes, then, how to re-think a political project that on the one hand initiates real structural social and economic change, but at the same time is actually politically viable.
It is with this question in mind that Carlos Pessoa conducted this interview with Leo Panitch, one of the leading advocates of a revived socialist project for the western democracies.

International Socialism: Making sense of imperialism: a reply to Leo Panitch and Sam Gindin
I was therefore rather disappointed by Leo Panitch and Sam Gindin’s reply to my article ‘Imperialism and Global Political Economy’.2 Rather than approaching my criticisms of their analysis of American imperialism as a contribution to this collective effort at understanding the world today, they took their response essentially as an opportunity to score points.
Panitch and Gindin aren’t the only Marxist political economists to believe that the crisis of profitability that afflicted capitalism in the 1970s and 1980s has now been overcome.
Panitch and Gindin make the correct point that the existence of tactical differences among states about how to pursue ‘global capitalist development and security’ isn’t ‘proof of fundamental divergences within the imperium’ (p197).

Baltimore Independent Media Center: Finance & American Empire. By Leo Panitch & Sam Gindin
Leo Panitch and Sam Gindin attempt to understand the historical process that led to New York City becoming the operational center of the global financial order and the way finance capital and US empire reinforce each other.
Panitch and Gindin examine the development of the Bretton Woods institutions (International Monetary Fund, World Bank), how the US state tried to manage class struggle and inflation in the 1960s and 1970s, the dominance of neoliberal policies since the 1980s, and how the globalization of finance capital has included the 'Americanization' of finance.
They argue that there are openings for the Left provided by the problems of neoliberalism and the legitimacy of the US imperial state, but that new strategies are needed to challenge capitalist social relations.
