Gentlemen Prefer Blondes the musical by Jules Styne and Leo Robin on stage in London's West End Open Air theatre - ...
Jule Styne and Leo Robin's 1949 musical of Anita Loos' classic 1920s novel ought to have enough pizzazz to raise the roof (possibly an ill-considered phrase for this particular venue), but tails off after the interval into a perfunctorily connected series of solo spots and contrived set-pieces, racing from cue to cue.
Leo Robin's anti-romantic lyrics are as bracing as whisky-sours, reaching a zenith in that great cautionary song Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend.
Though Leo Robin's lyrics are mostly less accomplished than Jule Styne's music, both men excelled themselves when they composed Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend and did pretty well when they turned to Just a Girl from Little Rock.

While the lyricist Leo Robin is not completely unknown -- he has a chapter in the book Reading Lyrics, and is remembered as the guy who wrote the lyrics to "Thanks For the Memory" -- he's not particularly well known, and he should be.
Robin more or less retired in the late '50s -- he turned down the chance to write the lyrics to Funny Girl, noting that it was too much like the cliche'd biopics the Hollywood studios had been churning out when he was there -- and died in 1984.
Robin was also good at writing comedy lyrics; "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" is his most famous comedy song, but he could also put some genuine wit into a pop lyric, playing with jokes and internal rhymes while still keeping the apparent simplicity that a good pop lyric needs.

Leo took Trent into a small room with many mirrors, Trent couldn't see the doorway anymore, that worried him a bit but Leo was right about the clothes, so he just pictured dinner with just the Queen and Daisy, it calmed him down a bit.
Leo scratched his plant ass, "Good, I wanna get home and slip into something more comfortable." And Leo did, in the darkness of his own home, he tangoed in his mirror room wearing his favorite polka dot thong.

 Leo McCarey
Of the greatest directors of the Classic Hollywood era, Leo McCarey's work and reputation are today among the most popularly and critically neglected.
Leo McCarey was the first son of Irish-Catholic Thomas McCarey, a well-known boxing promoter, and French-born Leona [Mistrol] McCarey, for whom he is named.
As Jonathan Rosenbaum so succinctly puts it, “the major lesson of Leo McCarey [is] that people and their tragicomic behavior matter much more than plot.” (19) That does not mean that McCarey is a director of great moments instead of great films, nor does it mean his films are digressive.

Leo Robin was one of the great musicals writers who isn't one of the first three or four you immediately think of when you think "standards writers", and probably for reasons not enitirely fair.
For one thing, inasmuch as so many of his tunes are for women, Frank Sinatra didn't do all that many of them;and for better or for worse, the catalog of Sinatra is a pretty good approximation of the canonical American Songbook.

CD Review (2): Thanks for the Memory: The Songs of Leo Robin, Susannah McCorkle
No female singer in recent memory-even counting the great and still-working Keely Smith as "recent"-was able to get the full value of a song as Susannah was, especially with songs where there was a lot of value.
Why I especially love this album is that it puts the marvelous Leo Robin center stage, a man that wrote songs that women singers could showcase, relate to-he even made poor confused Marilyn Monroe convincing.
I'm not going to claim the status of greatest songwriter of all for him-that's arguably Berlin, Porter, Kern, or Arlen-but he was a fine writer that in the scheme of things is often overlooked.

Granted, the team of Romberg and lyricist Leo Robin (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) didn't possess Porter's wit and melodic sense, but they still came up with a deliciously silly Parisian soufflé of a show--even if it was set in 19th-century New York.
The score by the late Sigmund Romberg and Leo Robin is quite formulaic, but does feature a handlful of memorable tunes like "When I am Free to Love", "Lost in Loveliness", "Up in the Elevated Railway" and "My Heart Won't Say Goodbye".
