Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith (18 December 1941 in Leland, Mississippi) is a trumpeter and composer working primarily in the fields of avant-garde jazz and free improvisation.
In addition to trumpet and flugelhorn, Smith plays several world music instruments, including the koto, kalimba, and atenteben (Ghanaian bamboo flute); he has also taught courses in instrument making.
Smith's Golden Quartet (with whom he's released two albums) features Jack DeJohnette on drums, Anthony Davis on keyboards, and Malachi Favors on bass.

Smith's awards include Meet the Composer/ Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Commissioning Program (1990 and 1996); Asian Cultural Council Grantee to Japan (June-August 1993); New York Foundation on the Arts Fellowship in Music (1990); numerous Meet the Composer Grants since 1977; and the National Endowment for the Arts Music Grants (1972, 1974, and 1981).
Smith's music philosophy "Notes (8 Pieces), Source of a New World Music: Creative Music" was published by Kiom Press in 1973, and translated and published in Japan by Zen-On Music Company Ltd. in 1976.
Smith's music for multi-ensembles has been performed since 1969, and his largest work "Odwira" for 12 multi-ensemble units was performed at CalArts in March, 1995.

Smith, who was involved in making the documentary film See the Music in 1970, formed the New Dalta Ahkri in New Haven, CT, an influential if under-documented band that at times included Henry Threadgill, Anthony Davis, and Oliver Lake.
Smith studied ethnomusicology in the mid-'70s at Wesleyan, played with Braxton in 1976, and recorded with Derek Bailey's Company.
Leo Smith, who founded the Kabell label in 1971, has also recorded for Freedom, Moers, ECM, Nesssa, FMP, Black Saint, Nessa, and Sackville in settings ranging from unaccompanied solos to a big band.

Hi Efren, The recent release of Reflectativity on Tzadik wasn't a re-issue; it was a new recording and as I recall fairly different in terms of improvisations (as well as having Malachi Favors on bass rather than, was it?, Wes Brown).
I'm away from my LPs right now, but Smith had at least four LPs on the Kabell label, including a solo disc, the old recording of Reflectativity, Song of Humanity and something else I can't remember the name of.
Complete with a twenty-eight page booklet featuring session photos and SUPERB tributes from musical associates such as George Lewis, Alvin Singleton, Larry Ochs, Anthony Davis, Bobby Naughton, Henry Kaiser and John Zorn, this is an essential collection from the peak period of one of Creative Music's most important composer/performers.
