 (144) Leo VI and Constantine VII
Leo VI (the Wise) came to the throne in A.D. 886, after his father, Basil I, died in a hunting accident (see no. 143).
Leo was called "the Wise" not because he was a particularly sage ruler but because he was a noted scholar who finished the revision of the legal text, the Codex Justinianus, that Basil had begun, renaming it the Basilica for his father.
For reasons not yet clearly understood, Leo VI apparently did not mint solidi for the first twenty years of his reign.

Leo VI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leo VI the Wise (September 19, 866 – May 11, 912) was Byzantine emperor from 886 to 912 during one of the most brilliant periods of the state's history.
Leo caused a major scandal with his numerous marriages which failed to produce a legitimate heir to the throne.
However, he and his father hated each other; it is possible that Leo was not Basil's son at all, but the son of his predecessor, Michael III.

 The Magyars - DBA 107
Emperor Leo VI the Wise (886-912 AD) noted that the Magyars "have a liking more for fighting at a distance, setting ambushes, encirclement of their enemy, simulated retreat and about-turning, and for the scattering of fighting formations." These are the classic tactics of a Light Horse army.
In 894 AD, Emperor Leo VI sought the aid of the Magyars against the Bulgars, who were threatening Byzantine territories in northern Greece.
Louis rebuffed them and then sought an alliance with the Moravians against the Magyars.
