 Lady Godiva
Leofric, earl of Mercia, and husband of Lady Godiva, was a man of broad but obscure interests; a religious man thoroughly Christian, and an entrepreneur, raconteur, and general all around good sport.
Leofric and Godiva came to be awarded the attention and respect they longed for from the start, and they had served the purposes of the church as well.
As a gentleman, and now established philanthropist of some local repute, Leofric assumed a growing role in the governance of public affairs, and was given responsibility for certain financial matters (the town had grown enough to actually have financial matters), which he quickly understood as presenting especially interesting opportunities.

Lady Godiva (Godifu, spelling of her time) according to historians, was an Anglo-Saxon woman that lived during the period of 1040-1080 A.D. She was married to Leofric, Earl of Mercia.

 Operation Leofric - History
The church of Leominster was a particular favourite of Leofric, earl of Mercia under King Cnut and husband of the pious Godifu - Lady Godiva.  It seems likely that it was Leofric who built the large stone structure recently found by ground penetrating radar adjacent to Leominster Priory.
The first religious foundation was by Merewald, a king of Mercia, about660 AD with Ealfred, a Northumbrian missionary, as the first Abbott. The legend is that Ealfred came into the King’s court, tired and weary, and sat down to eat bread.
The latter, who was buried in the Church about 1060, left lands to the Priory and a copy of the tablet to his memory may be seen on the south wall.
