Old Houses and Sites of Houses
It stands upon the opposite side of the street than formerly, and not having the present facilities for moving buildings, the house could not be turned around, and went onto the spot as it stands today, with the front of the house at the rear, and its back towards the street.
In 1750, a large two story house was built just north of the old one; this remained upon the spot, until the farm being sold by the Gates family in 1852, the house was moved across the field to the Lancaster road, where the old "red house" was a familiar landmark for years.
It is something Leominster can well be proud of; although we have increased many times in the number of houses, and population, since the settlement of the town, yet today each owner takes an interest in his property, and we find the majority of houses and grounds well cared for.
