Léon Bakst (May 10, 1866 - December 28, 1924) was a Russian painter and scene- and costume- designer.
Bakst designed settings for Greek tragedies, and in 1908 made a name as a scene-painter for Diaghilev with the Ballets Russes.
Bakst had a great influence on art and fashion in the early 20th century, especially on scene-designing, of which he was one of the first modern masters.

Leon was born Lev Rosenberg in Grodno (currently Belarus) in a middle class Jewish family.
Bakst designed settings for Greek tragedies, and in 1908 made a name as a scene-painter for Diaghilev with the Ballets Russes ((Cleopatra 1909, Shakherezada 1910, Carnaval 1910, Narcissus 1911, Daphnis et Chloé 1912).
Bakst advised Chagall not to go to Paris as according to Bakst it would be harmful for Chagal's art and financially would probably make in die of starvation.

Bakst traveled regularly to various countries into Europe and North Africa and studied in Paris with a number of notable artists including the French Orientalist painter Jean-Leon Gerome at the Academie Julian and, from 1893 to 1896, the Finish landscape painter Albert Adelfelt.
Through Benois and his circle Bakst was attracted to "retrospectivism" and Orientalism, and motifs from ancient Greece and Egypt became signatures in his easel paintings and theoretical work.
Bakst did not experiment with Cubism, abstraction or any other innovations of the early 20th century, yet he modernized stage design and had many imitators.

Bakst attended the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg from 1883 to 1886, but left after displeasing the authorities there with his painting of "Madonna weeping over Christ" in which all the figures were Jewish.
Leon Bakst died in Paris on 28th December, 1924, at the age of 58.

Lev Smoïlevitch Rosenberg called Bakst (1866-1924) studied painting in Saint Petersburg and then visited Paris before settling in Moscow where he was first known as a painter of Russian popular life.
Bakst founded the «Mir Iskousstva» (the Artistic World) group and then moved to Paris in 1893.
Mixing the ingredients of Russian art and French modernism with a touch reminiscent of that of Aubrey Beardsley and of Persian miniatures as well as Fauvism he produced some magnificent pieces for the Shehrazad and Cleopatra ballets in 1909 and 1910.

Born in St.Petersburg and originally called Leon Rosenberg, Bakst became a scenic artist to the Imperial Theatres in1900.
With a profound belief in the power of the imagination on aesthetics Bakst became a member of the World of art Group and was taken on as a designer by Diaghilev in 1909.
Bakst used a broad range of bewitching and sumptuous colours in his attempt to display atmosphere and the spirit of the age in which the play was set, transporting the spectator to the imagination.

Leon Bakst (1866-1924) was born to a Jewish family in Grodno, Belarus, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St.Petersburg, Russia.
In 1912, Bakst had to leave St. Petersburg (being Jewish, in an era of state Christianity, he was not allowed to reside in major Russian cities) and settled in Paris.
