 AMZ - May, 1999 - Charley Hunter/Leon Parker
Percussionist Leon Parker has introduced an interesting array of polyrhythms into his rigid timekeeping, owing to early handiwork with saxist Dewey Redman, as well as forays with world beat.
While Parker is familiar with a variety of settings, from big bands to his own solo album, Hunter comes from a lineage of ensemble work, trading tasks with three other guitarists in T.J. Kirk, a vibist for his recent Pound For Pound group, and a pair of saxophones in his own quartet.
Following with muted blues, Parker's "Belief," the lonesome Hunter unfurls a wicked walking bass figure, peeling off lead licks and counterpoint chording that would be astonishing for any pair of players to recreate.

Parker's drum playing is, while not minimal, extremely riff-based.
While for most people, this would be a one-way road to tedium, Parker pulls it off by actively manipulating the sounds he can get from each piece.

 Charlie Hunter/Leon Parker
This couple isn't as odd as you might think, at least not once you stop to consider their respective approaches to modern improvisation.
Both Hunter and Parker make a virtue out of ambidextrous instrumentation—the former with his eight-string guitar-bass, and the latter with his arsenal of ethnic hand percussion.
Less inspired is their take on Parker's "Belief," which suffers from sparse melodic treatment.

This is a timbrally spare date, essentially Parker engaging a multitude of skins, shakers, gongs, mallets, keyboard, and even a bowl, joined by other percussionists, by saxophones and flutes on assorted tracks, and voice on several pieces.
But what Parker brings to this broad rhythmic, spare harmonic landscape is an enormous bag of rhythmic traditions.

Parker is also a composer of the first order, having written seven wonderfully diverse yet harmonically linked pieces on the album.

Wilson, Davis and Harrell all do some strong blowing, but the melodic materials on this collection are not that grippingly interesting; but then, they are not the point.
Parker is the kind of musician who approaches music from a deep spiritual place, seeking meaning, seeking the roots, seeking in music the expression of a bond common to all humanity.
This is a tall order, and whether you feel he has succeeded with this album or not, it's definitely worth a listen.

Besides his incomparable skills on the kit, what I like about Parker is his musical vision.
To me, Leon Parker combines the best of both worlds: his music has a fresh, interesting sound, but it's rooted in rhythmic grooves that make it accessible: it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.

He frequently appeared with just a snare, bass and cymbal, and on occasion he would dispense with the snare and bass, playing whole sets on just a cymbal, and getting more out of it than some players could pull out of their enormous trap sets.
While he mixes and matches musicians freely to achieve his particular goals for each track, vocalist Elisabeth Kontomanou and saxophonist Steve Wilson are his most consistent accomplices on this disc, and their efforts deserve special note.
Still in his 30s, Leon Parker has already changed the face of rhythmic composition and accompaniment.

His second solo effort, Belief (Columbia), features a concept similar to his first solo release: a streetwise and innovative take on the jazz canon experimenting with African hand drums, shakers and bells.
Parker's transition seems effortless, a reflection of his belief that different grooves stem from the same musical traditions; it's exciting to think of what direction his quintet will take the music next.
