		Portilla has long been a proponent of the idea that the Aztec tlamatinime (philosophers) believed in far fewer gods than the rest of the populace (I will leave the statement at that, as Portilla’s own claims change from book to book and paragraph to paragraph).
		Although Portilla is a scholar and writes lengthy works on his theories, and although he is the foremost translator of Nahuatl, he is unable to back this one.
		Most of Portilla's books are relatively dated (these two volumes were both published in the 1960's), and during this period and earlier, it was not uncommon for scholars to theorize and even insist that clearly polytheistic cultures contained a secretive monotheistic elite.

		While Portilla clearly loves the subjects of his studies, he is perhaps one of the worst scholars in regards to pushing his pet theories.
		Portilla's favorite theory is that, while the majority of the Aztec populace believed that what they were worshipping were innumerable gods, there existed an educated elite that understood that all the gods were merely names for Ometeotl and its' four sons, the cosmic forces.
		Portilla doesn't offer any evidence for his theory but merely states that it is so, and not even his own translations of Aztec philosophical, theological, and poetic texts backs up his theory, but often contradict it.
