Review | Any Time by Leon Redbone
Redbone's throaty, mumble-mouthed delivery and reinterpretation of turn-of-the-century and Depression-era ragtime and folk-jazz songs become a testament to his great love for a time when melody was king and electric instruments weren't yet a thought.
Redbone established himself as somewhat of an oddity in the music business, taking mostly pre-World War II songs and imbuing them with what can only be thought of as Redbone's unique style and humor.
Redbone manages to keep these classic songs sounding fresh while staying surprisingly true to the period from which they were first produced.

For nearly 20 years, Leon Redbone has showcased his blend of jazz and folk to a whole host of eager ears.
Leon Redbone has released his first album in seven years, entitled Any Time, and the title signifies when this CD is fun to listen to: any time.
Redbone, perhaps best known for the Budweiser themes of the 70's or "Your Feets Too Big", the theme song for the TV show Harry and the Hendersons, puts his own personal spin of thirteen songs ranging from 1920's jazz, World War II-era big band, and Broadway-style torch songs.

Those familiar with Leon Redbone for among other things his many Saturday Night Live appearances know him as much for his hat, dark sunglasses, and Groucho Marx moustache as his baritone voice.
Redbone dusts off his banjo and does some picking, accompanied by Leonard Pickett's fife, and a wistful cover of "Moonlight Bay." All the songs on the album are handled gently and carefully by Redbone and he never seeks to upstage the original versions of these songs.
Redbone's style and also a fun album for those who like jazz, ragtime, and/or just a laid back sound.

Leon Redbone : Live & Kickin' (Master Classics) - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Describing Redbone as a folk singer is definitely valid -- folk is a major part of what he does -- but at the same time, Redbone's love affair with pre-World War II music also has a lot to do with blues, classic jazz, ragtime, vaudeville and traditional pop.
Redbone is as eclectic as he is retro, and his love of privacy only adds to the guy's mystique -- apart from the notoriously media-shy Prince, you would be hard-pressed to find a more guarded, privacy-obsessed singer than Leon Redbone.
Whatever the recording date(s), Redbone is in generally fine form on these performances -- and in true Redbone fashion, the earthy vocalist/guitarist tackles an intriguing variety of songs.
