His left arm (the "fretting" arm) was totally crushed, and even after finally leaving various hospitals, Leon still had to endure years of more surgeries and rehabilitation before he could even begin to play the bass again, not to mention the other numerous injuries he suffered.

No Leon was not the last surving member Gary Rossington and Billy Powell were on the air plane in 1977 and surived that crash.
A side note, Leon quit the band just prior to the recording of "Second Helping" Ed King played the bass for a while in the studio and according to Ronnie "was the worst bass player I've ever heard".
I think Leon can be replaced in the current setup of the band....they have adapted before and will probably do so again being that they were the 9th highest grossing U.S. concert act of 1999 or 2000.

It was only a few weeks ago that Leon and I had a few drinks in the bar of some hotel or other.
Drinking with Leon that night, he told me about his damaged arm, showed me the scars, and demonstrated how he had had to learn to play all over again after the plane crash.
My thoughts now are with his family and also with his band mates, who again have to face the harsh realities of life and death.
