Leonard Shoen was neither a confidential source nor did he insist that the details of his discussions with Watkins not be disclosed.
This argument fails to recognize that the extent of Leonard Shoen's knowledge about the murder at the time of the Watkins interviews--which began a year after the bulk of the alleged libels--sheds little light on the extent of his knowledge or disregard for the truth at the time he made the statements to the press.
Leonard Shoen admitted during his deposition that he discussed with Watkins his motivations for agreeing to be a source for the book; namely, his determination to discover the true murderers of Eva Shoen.

Leonard's cooperation as a source for Watkins' book was not kept secret; nor does it appear that Leonard had any expectation that the information he provided Watkins would remain confidential.
Soon after Leonard agreed to be a source for Watkins' book, Watkins wrote a letter to the public relations manager of U-Haul, stating that Leonard was "extending his complete cooperation [on the book] without preconditions." ER at 28 (emphasis added).
The lawsuit was against L.S. Shoen and a faction of the Shoen family for defaming the plaintiffs by making statements in 1989 and 1990 suggesting that they might be involved in the murder of their sister-in-law.

The Samuel Shoen Interests appeal the bankruptcy court's order which determined that the post- petition interest at the Arizona judgment rate stopped running once the Edward Shoen Interests deposited the then accrued interest in an interest bearing Escrow Account under the aus- pices of the bankruptcy court.
The Arizona Superior Court told the Samuel Shoen Interests that if they wanted their damages they had to turn over their stock to the Edward Shoen Interests, and gave the Edward Shoen Interests the consolation of knowing that once they paid all that was owed they could have the stock.
The court found that the verdict was based on an inflated valuation of the company and issued a remittitur, requiring the Samuel Shoen Interests to accept $461,838,000 in compensatory damages and $7 mil- lion in punitive damages or to have a new trial on damages.

But the widow of late U-Haul International Inc. founder Leonard Shoen, once the owner of the hotel, is in a legal battle with his children and his estate's administrator, Shawn King, over whether the hotel should be sold for the proposed $14.1 million and how the sales proceeds should be split.
Carol Shoen said she is protecting her claim to voting rights to half of the stock of hotel owner Amerco Entrepreneurial and to the proceeds of the hotel's proposed sale by fighting alleged attempts by hotel creditor Katabasis Inc. to pressure Amerco into quickly selling the property at a low price.
The three children, Samuel and Michael Shoen and Cecilia Shoen Hanlon, who said in a June 2000 lawsuit that Carol Shoen allegedly told Samuel Shoen the claims of Shoen's estate should take priority over any claims by the Shoen children, won an order that freezes the distribution of funds from the hotel's sale.

Of his entanglement with sons Joe and Mark, who fought with their brothers and ousted him as chairman, Schoen came to say "I created a monster." The family of the slain sister-in-law, Eva Berg Schoen, have offered a $250,000 reward for information concerning the murder.
Shoen founded U-Haul with a single trailer in 1945 and directed the company's growth until he was ousted from leadership by a rival faction, led by two of his sons, in the mid-1980s.
The battle for control of the company is still being fought, and the unsolved murder of Eva Shoen (wife of one of Schoen's sons) has added to the intrigue of this bitter family feud.

 AMERCO -- Company History
The younger Shoen worked picking fruit, butchering cattle, and cutting hair to pay for a three-year stint at college, which ended when he was expelled for providing answers for a classmate.
Over the years Shoen gave his children progressively greater shares of the company in preparation for eventually handing it over to their control, so that by the early 1980s, his seven sons and five daughters owned 95 percent of the outstanding shares of the company, while he controlled only 2 percent.
The libel suit, meanwhile, was one of several court proceedings involving the Shoen family and the company that carried on well into the 1990s; all of the cases argued that one or another of the family factions was the rightful manager of the company.

Looking at the 9th Circuit's best-case version, the "Shoen II" test, the government must: (1)demonstrate that it has exhausted all reasonable alternative means for obtaining the information.
The (Arkansas)8th circuit, in the Starr-Watergate subpoena-fest, criticizes the 9th Circuit's Shoen "reporter privilege" holding, but goes on to affirm the broad scope of "atty-client privilege." The Supreme court denies an appeal of that holding, a move that is generally perceived as approval of the lower court's holding.

Shoen responded by opening more and more company owned outlets and also branching out into other consumer rentals such as carpet steam cleaners and self-storage.
Perhaps due to the consequence of internal squabbles, the fact that U-Haul is a generic for the category, or just the nature of the business, the company seems to bear the brunt of negative publicity surrounding self-move rentals.
