Leonard De Quirm strode confidently across the garden; his path pointed more or less straight toward the place where Haverlock Vetinari was playing with his scruffy old dog.
Leonard could be dangerous if he ever turned his attention to human beings instead of natural science and mechanisms.
Every one of the members of the City Watch dived behind something that was designed by Leonard De Quirm to make life easier for everyday man. They all knew from experience what a gonne was capable of and this one was an order of magnitude worse than even their vivid imaginings.

Leonard of Quirm was sketching when the Patrician unlocked the door of his large room and entered.
'Leonard of Quirm (the Elder), Sophia of Quirm (his wife), Leonard of Quirm (the younger) (his son)...' The list of assorted aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents was rather long.
Leonard was standing beside the door when Lord Vetinari opened it, holding a red envelope which he handed bashfully to the Patrician.

Leonard is a man of indeterminate age, balding and with a long beard.
Originally from Quirm, he moved to Ankh-Morpork a long time ago and is currently a permanent guest of the Patrician.
It is this naivity that has led to his imprisonment by the Patrician, lest someone other than him make use of the man's genius.

Leonard was now engaged in building a new version of the Kite, but because he was Leonard, his work was punctuated by the spontaneous invention of other things.
But the self-portrait was as-yet unfinished because, mid-sketch, Leonard had glanced at his reflection in the hand-mirror he was using, shouted that Ephebian word that meant "Bring me a towel!", snatched up the mirror and dashed to the other end of his workshop.
Leonard's rather greasy face, wearing an expression that suggested he'd been brought not only a towel, but someone rather nice to dry his hair for him while he scrawled down his theory of buoyancy, appeared from behind a Device.

Leonard of Quirm is not so much old as old-looking - his head has risen up through his hair like the dome of a mountain, and he's one of those fellows who gives the impression of being an absentminded old fellow regardless of his actual age.
For the Patrician, Leonard is that most precious of things: a confidant.
He doesn't understand politics in the slightest, and has no interest in Ankh-Morpork, and as such the Patrician can talk to himself while Leonard listens.

And so the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork turns to the wizards of Unseen University and to Leonard of Quirm[2] to figure out how to stop Cohen.
And so Leonard, Captain Carrot of the Watch and Rincewind, the reluctant wizard[3] set out in the Discworld's first spacecraft to orbit the Disc and get there in time to stop Cohen and company.
Unlike the usual Discworld adventure, this is a large-format book with illustrations by Paul Kidby[5], and the illustrations (while not essential to the story) are hilarious and complement Pratchett's inspired satirical insanity brilliantly.

The da Quirm family is known for its eccentrics, such as Ponce da Quirm, who spent his entire life, from cradle to grave, looking for the Fountain of Youth.
However, the family's breeding has struck a new milestone in Leonard, who designs siege engines in his sleep and whose scale-model rockets occasionally metamorphise into coffee percolators if he gets thirsty while building them.

The Last Hero is a Discworld Book about Cohen the Barbarian, who decides to give back what the first hero stole from the gods.
Rincewind, Captain Carrot and Leonard da Quirm go to stop Cohen from destroying the world, but on the way they explore what is underneath the disc and become the first people from the Disc to land on the moon.
It's interesting because Terry Pratchett has mixed the greek myth about Prometheus, the moon landing and Leonardo da Vinci's inventions all together adding a little bit of magic and humour to create one of the best books he has written.
