Ruggero Leoncavallo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ruggero Leoncavallo (April 23, 1857- August 9, 1919) was an Italian opera composer.
Leoncavallo was educated at the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in his native city, Naples.
Leoncavallo was the librettist for all of his own operas.

 Leoncavallo's La Bohème
The story behind Leoncavallo's La Bohème began when Ruggiero Leoncavallo encountered his friend Giacomo Puccini in a café and suggested to him that they collaborate on an opera based on Henri Murger's book Scènes de la Vie de Bohème. Leoncavallo's idea was that Puccini would write the music to Leoncavallo's adaptation of the novel.
Leoncavallo, undiscouraged by the success of his rival, continued to work on his version, and on May 6, 1897, Leoncavallo's La Bohème was given its first performance at the Teatro Fenice in Venice.
The impresario of Chatterton, Leoncavallo's first opera, had absconded with the box office receipts, leaving Leoncavallo a ruined man. In light of this devastating experience, the depth of passion, frustration and anguish expressed in his music for La Bohème is easily understood.

Leoncavallo understood that his friend Marco Sala, a journalist who was a habitué of the best-known salons of the time, was quite right: "Defend your work in any way you can and keep your eyes wide open.
Giordano and others, Leoncavallo thus became a true member of that "Young School of Italian Music" which professed the ideals of a renewal of Italian opera.
The German Emperor, Wilhelm II commissioned Leoncavallo to write Der Roland von Berlin in 1904, and this was followed by Maia (1910), Gli Zingari (1912), Goffredo Mameli (1916) and Edipo Re (1920).

Marston Records - Leoncavallo’s Chatterton and Pagliacci
Leoncavallo talked of reworking the opera for a baritone lead and Tita Ruffo even recorded the aria ‘Tu solo a me rimani’ in November, 1908.
HMV’s recordings of Leoncavallo’s operas Pagliacci and Chatterton made in 1907 and 1908 are of seminal importance in the history of recording, not only for the participation of the composer but also as the beginning of a century-long commitment to the recording of complete works.
Leoncavallo undertakes to ‘conduct personally on the request of the company the performances that will be necessary for the perfect recording of his operas.’; It was planned to record Chatterton in the autumn of 1907 but for reasons that are unclear in the correspondence the recordings did not take place until 1908.

Ruggero Leoncavallo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After some years spent teaching and in ineffective attempts to obtain the production of more than one opera, he saw the enormous success of Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana in 1890, and he wasted no time in producing his own verismo hit, Pagliacci.
Its most famous aria Vesti la giubba ("On with the motley") was recorded by Enrico Caruso and became the world's first record to sell 1 million copies.
Nothing from the latter opera is heard today, but the baritone aria from Zazà is still often sung.

 Life of Ruggiero Leoncavallo
Ruggiero Leoncavallo was born at Naples in March 1858, so that he was thirty-four when "Pagliacci" was produced in 1892.
Leoncavallo, an interviewer once told, has on his writing-table a framed portrait of Wagner, to which he would point, saying: "Voilà mon Wagner, qui ne me quitte jamais." He was also proud of a bust of Massenet, presented by the composer, and inscribed, "A mon confrère, à mon ami, Leoncavallo."
He replied that the idea was suggested by a trial that took place at Cosenza before his father, judge of the court there, in which a strolling player, jealous of his wife, was charged with murdering her after a stage performance.

Ruggero Leoncavallo was born in Naples on March 5, 1858.
Leoncavallo's libretto was based on Catulle Mendès' play La Femme de Tabarin (1887), although Leoncavallo's version of how he came to his libretto was more colorful.
In 1897, Leoncavallo premiered La Bohème which is one of his finest works, and even though Leoncavallo's version followed Henri Mürger's story more closely than Puccini's, it was completely eclipsed by the success of Puccini's version which premiered in 1896.

Leoncavallo's next work was an adaptation of Henri Murger's Scènes de la vie de bohème for the operatic stage.
This led to one of the more heated rivalries of the late 19 th century, for Puccini announced he also was planning to produce an opera based on Murger's book, an intention he claimed to have had for several months.

Leoncavallo received his musical education at the conservatory of his native Naples, going from there to Bologna where he received a degree in literature.
Leoncavallo wrote a few moderately successful operas (including a setting of La bohème, written close on the heels of Puccini's), but his fame rests with this one rather short work, which is most often performed paired with another work by a single-hit operatic composer, Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana (1890).

Pagliacci, a story of love and jealousy in a troupe of commedia dell'arte actors, has achieved a permanent place in operatic repertoire, often, in view of its relative brevity, coupled with Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana.
Leoncavallo's first opera, Chatterton, won no favour, while his version of La bohème was soon eclipsed by that of Puccini.

This is a very fine recording of Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci." There aren't too many negatives to note concerning it, but there are enough to merit a four-star rating instead of a five.
Leoncavallo was inspired to write his two-act verismo opera Pagliacci by the phenomenal success of Mascagni's one act verismo opera Cavelleria Rusticana.
While Pagliacci is not quite as seemlessly beautiful from beginning to end as its almost-perfect predecessor, it has nevertheless established a solid place for itself in the repertoire of most-popular operas.

As with so many verismo composers, such as Leoncavallo and Mascagni, Umberto Giordano's name has survived on the strength of a single opera.
Just as Italians in the eighteenth century would have nothing to do with Gluck, so in the nineteenth century they were extremely uncomfortable with Wagner, an attitude typified by the career of Ruggero Leoncavallo.
Verismo opera, which flared onto the musical landscape of Italy during the last ten years of the nineteenth century, was largely inspired by the literary realism of writers like Zola and the Sicilian Giovanni Verga, and it, in turn, foreshadowed the world of soap opera.
