Stejneger was born in Bergen, Norway, and studied law and philosophy at the University of Christiania.
He got a Ph.D. and started a brief career as a lawyer.

Leonhard Stejneger (1851-1943) was born in Bergen, Norway, and received his early education there.
Stejneger's correspondence as curator of Reptiles and Batrachians as well as some correspondence he conducted while assistant curator in the Department of Birds is found in the Division of Reptiles and Amphibians Records, 1873-1968 (see Record Unit 161).

Stejneger, who had always had an interest in zoology, emigrated to the United States in 1881 when the family business went under in Norway.
He soon attracted the attention of Spencer Baird at the Smithsonian and began working under the supervision of the ornithologist Robert Ridgway.
Stejneger specialized in vertebrate natural history studies; although he started out working primarily on birds he gained his greatest reputation with reptiles and amphibians, also studying mammals.

 Arnoux's Beaked Whale - Dolphins And Whales Window
The two species are the largest of all beaked whales and collectively they are sometimes referred to as the giant beaked whales.
Baird's Beaked Whale was first described by Leonhard Hess Stejneger in 1883 from a specimen found in the Bering Sea.
It is named for Spencer Fullerton Baird, a past Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute.

There is only one species known of the genus Neoseps, the Neoseps reynoldsi, commonly known as the (Florida) Sand Skink.
The species has been described by Leonhard Hess Stejneger in 1910 and named in honor of one A. Reynolds, who had collected the holotype.
A unique lizard adapted to an underground existence, the Sand Skink measures 10 to 13 cm (4 to 5 inches) in length and has a gray to tan color.
