Good taste is so pervasive at Mercouri that we were not the least surprised about the originality and universally high quality of their wines.

 Lakonia in the Peloponnese, Greece
Now it is a largely agricultural area with high mountains, beautiful beaches and small towns and villages all with their own charm.
Unlike the Athenians who built temples and massive walls, the men of Sparta were considered the walls and there are few ruins from classical times, but they include the remains of the ancient acropolis, the sanctuary of Artemis and the tomb of Leonidas, whose small band of Spartan warriors held the Persians at Thermopaleae.
The whole area known as Pyrgos Dirou is famous for its towers, some of which are hotels.

NEW EVIDENCE FOR WINE PRODUCTION IN EAST CRETE IN THE HELLENISTIC PERIOD. CONFIRMATION THROUGH THIN-SECTION PETROGRAPHY
Although a small number of Hellenistic stamped amphora handles from Hierapytna have been found in Alexandria, historians have dismissed the material as evidence for substantial off-island trade of Cretan wine.
BC); petrographic analysis has confirmed the Cretan origin of the amphoras from Mochlos and Pyrgos Myrtos in East Crete and from Knossos in Central Crete.
In a recent conference on "Transport Amphorae and Trade in the Eastern Mediterranean", I argued that there is substantial evidence for production of local wine amphoras in East Crete as early as the 3rd century BC.

 Thebes, Greece
The aversion to Athens best serves to explain the unpatriotic attitude which Thebes displayed during the great Persian War.
Though a contingent of 700 was sent to Thermopylae and remained there with Leonidas to the end, the governing aristocracy soon after joined the enemy with great readiness and fought zealously on his behalf at the battle of Plataea in 479 BC.
The victorious Greeks subsequently punished Thebes by depriving it of the presidency of the Boeotian League, and an attempt by the Spartans to expel it from the Delphic amphictyony was only frustrated by the intercession of Athens.

Numerous excavations in all of the ancient Macedonian area have consistently unearthed relics clearly with Hellenic writings and depictions of rulers clearly designated with Hellenic names.
In September of1991, this republic declared independence from Yugoslavia and named itself “Republic of Macedonia.” They designed a new flag with the sun of Vergina at its center and printed new currency with the White Tower (Lefkos Pyrgos) of Thessaloniki, symbols clearly from the northern province of Greece.
Because of these actions and also because of certain articles in their constitution which implied that their country had territorial rights to all of the ancient Macedonian area, Greece imposed a trade embargo and prevented any trade commerce through Greece’s northern border.
