Francisco Varela - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Francisco Varela (Santiago, September 7, 1946 – May 28, 2001 in Paris) was a Chilean biologist and philosopher, who, together with Humberto Maturana, is most well-known for introducing the concept of autopoiesis to biology.
Varela is also a proponent of the embodied philosophy which claims that human cognition and consciousness can only be understood in terms of the enactive structures in which they arise, namely the body, and the environment in which the body interacts.
He is also the father of actress and model Leonor Varela.

Varela opted to remain in Paris to pursue an education when her parents returned to Santiago in the early 1990s.
Varela then was tapped for a tiny role in the remake of "The Man in the Iron Mask" (1998), starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
That film's release, however, was delayed nearly two years and in the interim, Varela graced the small screen as Judith in the biblical drama "Jeremiah" (PAX, 2000) and was seen on the big screen supporting Pierce Brosnan and Geoffrey Rush in "The Tailor of Panama" (2000).

Refered to a French filmmaker by her dentist (who, enamored by her exotic beauty created a role specifically designed for the burgeoning actress in The Shooting Stars [1997]), Varela found her popularity on the rise when she was cast in the Chilean TV series Tic Tac.
