Leontopolis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The geographers Hierocles, George of Cyprus, and others call that locality Leonto, reserving the name of Leontopolis for a town in the province of gypta Prima; similarly in the signatures of bishops collected by Le Quien (Oriens Christianus, II, 553) Leonto is always found.
Leonto is the modern Tell Mokdam on the right bank of the Nile (Damietta branch), near the railway from Cairo to Damietta which follows the left bank of the river.
Callinice in Syria was called Leontopolis, also a town in Isauria (Le Quien, "Oriens Christianus", II, 1021) not yet recognized.

It may be taken for granted that the Egyptian Jews sacrificed frequently in the temple of Leontopolis, although at the same time they fulfilled their duty toward the Temple at Jerusalem, as Philo narrates that he himself did ("De Providentia," in Eusebius, l.c.
According to Josephus, the temple of Leontopolis existed for 343 years, though the general opinion is that this number must be changed to 243.
It was closed either by the governor of Egypt, Lupus, or by his successor, Paulinus, about three years after the destruction of the Temple at Jerusalem; and the sacrificial gifts, or rather the interior furnishings, were confiscated for the treasury of Vespasian ("B. J." vii.

About 10 kilometers (6.25 miles) southeast of the modern town of Mit Ghamir on the Damietta branch of the Nile are the several mounds that represent all that is left of ancient Taremu (Leontopolis, or "City of the Lions").
Leontopolis was mentioned by Strabo in his Geography reference work, and the name appears sporadically in other classical and coptic documents.
There was once a temple of the local lion-god, Mihos (hence, Leontopolis, "City of the Lions") located here, and while ruined, its location has been found on the eastern part of the site.

There was to be also some inroad made upon the heathenism of Egypt by the message of the Lord (Isaiah 19:21), and about that time a deliverer should arise in Egypt (Isaiah 19:20), and all this should take place before the power of the land of Assyria should pass away (Isaiah 19:23).
Some think that the conversion of the Egyptians indicated in Isaiah 19:21,22 is furthered, though still not completed, in the Christian invasion of the 1st century, and again in the success of modern Christian missions in Egypt.
Naville, through his study of the great Harris papyrus, believed that the old Egyptian city which later was called Leontopolis (Tell el-Yehudiyeh) was immediately connected with On and called "House of Ra," also "House of the Sun." Thus, this name might be both transliterated and translated into the Hebrew ha-cherec and have `ir prefixed.

Some historians have suggested that the Temple at Leontopolis was meant to rival the one in Jerusalem, since Onias claimed to be the rightful heir to the post of the High Priest.
Its location, however, suggests that it was only meant to be a sanctuary for Jewish soldiers in the region, as Jewish soldiers played a vital part in the succession disputes that followed the death of Ptolemy Philometor.

The plan of the Leontopolis temple indicates that it was not intended to be a rival to the Jerusalem sanctuary, but rather a common place of meeting for the Egyptian Jews and of defence in case of attack.
Far more significant than the building of the Leontopolis temple was the translation of the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek.
The tradition preserved by Josephus that the translation was made in seventy-two days by seventy-two scholars, sent from Jerusalem by Eleazar the high priest at the request of Ptolemy, is clearly unhistorical.

There is possibly a reference to the Egyptian temple of Leontopolis (501).
It is well-known that there was a large Jewish settlement in several cities in Egypt, Leontopolis being one of them.
Since Sibylline Oracle 5 has a heavy Jewish flavor and most scholars recognize that oracles 3-5 (and possibly 11) have a Jewish origin, the notion of Egyptian provenance is very plausible.
