  Leopold Godowsky - Biography
Godowsky was born on 13 February 1870, the only child of Anna and Matthew Godowsky, in Sozly, a little town not far from Wilno, the ancient capital of Lithuania.
Godowsky made his first public appearance at the age of nine in Wilno, and soon afterwards, under the enthusiastic auspices of his adopted father Louis Passinock, made his first tour as a piano wunderkind.

Marston Records - Complete Leopold Godowsky, Vol. 1
Leopold Godowsky was born in 1870 in the small town of Sozly, near Vilna (now Vilnius), at the confluence of the Polish, Russian, and Lithuanian borders.
Godowsky, in fact, believed it was a performer’s duty to know by memory every single note and marking in a score, and he was known to explode in anger when he felt a performer had neglected his duty in this area.
Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938), known to pianophiles as “The Buddha of the Keyboard” and “The Apostle of the Left Hand,” was one of the great geniuses in pianistic history, earning the highest esteem as both performer and composer.

Godowsky went, but three months was enough for him at which point the thirteen-year-old left Berlin for America with his mother and Passinock.
Unfortunately Godowsky was not asked to record any of his own compositions that he played at the London concerts, and the few Schubert song transcriptions that Columbia did ask him to record have not survived; in 1926 he recorded two of these transcriptions for Brunswick, and a marvellous performance of Liszt’s Concert Paraphrase on Rigoletto.
Godowsky was, without doubt, one of the greatest of pianists, but it should be borne in mind that his recordings really give only an indication of the vast talent he possessed.

Godowsky the composer was capable of the insouciant flamboyance of his metamorphoses on “Fledermaus” themes, or the diabolically clever “Badinage,” his combination of Chopin’s two G-flat Etudes.
Godowsky emphasizes neither dominant nor tonic, playing the left hand with marvelous smoothness but very little shape, and for this reason alone his approach is less interesting than his peers’, despite the right hand’s elegance.
