Thomas's Glassware Tour: Austria in Italy, 1815—1866
In Austria, Franz-Joseph was followed by his grandnephew Archduke Karl of Austria-Este (b.1887, d.1922) who became Emperor Karl I (King Karl IV of Hungary) in 1916 until the end of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1918.
After the assassination of Franz-Ferdinand in 1914 in Sarajevo, his sons, the later Dukes of Hohenberg, could not inherit the title as they were descendent of a morganatic marriage, and the title passed to Franz-Ferdinands nephew, Archduke Karl of Austria (1887—1922) (from then on Austria-Este).
As Francesco V died without a male heir, the title 'Duke of Modena' passed to the nephew of Emperor Franz-Joseph I, Archduke Franz-Ferdinand of Austria (1863—1914), who changed his name to Austria-Este.

Andrew Wheatcroft (1995) " The Habsburgs - Embodying Empire " reported that Duke Leopold V of Austria (referred to in one source as "Leopold Heldenthum") was of the Babenberg dynasty.
Duke Leopold V was supposedly granted these arms by King Henry VI, based on the battle-bloodied tunic of the duke, which had remained white only where covered by his wide belt.
The story goes that one of the early rulers of Austria wore a white tunic in battle one day, and the battle was so bloody that the entire tunic was bloodstained by the end of the fighting.

In 1314 Alberts son, Frederick, was chosen German king in opposition to Louis IV., duke of Upper Bavaria, afterwards the emperor Louis IV., and Austria was weakened by the efforts of the Habsburgs to sustain Frederick in his contest with Louis, and also by the struggle carried on between another brother, Leopold, and the Swiss.
In 976 his son, the emperor Otto II., entrusted the government of this mark, soon to be known as Austria, to Leopold, a member of the family of Babenberg (q.v.), and its administration was conducted with vigour and success.
Leopold, then, reverted to the traditional Habsburg methods; the old supremacy of the Church, regarded as the one effective bond of empire, was restored; and the Einheitsstaal was once more resolved into its elements, with the old machinery of diets and estates, and the old abuses.

 JewishEncyclopedia.com - AUSTRIA
Duke Leopold V. (1177-94), who did a great deal for the development of commerce in Austria, had a Jewish "mintfarmer" (master of the mint) called Shlom, who was engaged in a litigation with a Vienna monastery about the possession of a vineyard.
The new ruler naturally sought to gain the good-will of the citizens in his newly acquired territory, and, therefore, soon after the occupation of Austria, he confirmed to the cities the privilege granted to them by Duke Frederick of the exclusion of Jews from public office.
Under the order of the duke, all the Jews of Austria were imprisoned (May 23, 1420); the poor among them were expelled from the country; and the well-to-do were kept in prison, and their property was confiscated.

The history of the Graz penny, and thus of an individual currency for the land of Styria, begins in 1186 with the Georgenberger Handfeste (Georgenberg Document), in which the last duke of the Traungau family, Otakar IV, bequeathed his lands to the Babenberg duke Leopold V of Austria.
Minting in Graz was begun by Duke Leopold VI most likely around 1215, following the model of Friesach.
When Otakar died in 1192, the Duchy of Styria passed to the Babenbergs and thus was linked with Austria.
