Widhalm and he was therefore forced to live and operate his business outside of the city walls.
It is probably a good bet that this in many ways contributed to the survival of most of the instruments we know today because they would have been sold to one of the many schools and monasteries that were scattered across the country side.
Most of what we know about the Widhalm family today was researched and written down by Klaus Martuis in his book "Leopold Widhalm and the Luthier's of Nurnberg in the 18th Century" which, unfortunately is only available in German and is currently out of print.

The makers there extended the range of the instrument to suit the demands posed by new musical developments, and by 1719 composers were writing for lutes with 13courses.
This invention is often ascribed to Sylvius Leopold Weiss.
It is clear from the details of the tabulature that Weiss wrote throughout his life for this version of the 13 course lute which was developed by the new wave of German makers, working in Bohemia and Germany itself.

A rare opportunity to see the internal bracing (along with the Widhalm and Tielke) shows a transition from the J-Bar bracing to a symmetrical fan bracing which seems to be a feature of the later Baroque lutes, as well as, the triple head design of both Jauch and Bruner.
More evidence that Antonio de Torres did not invent the fan bracing and, in fact, fan bracing was in use as early as 1750 in lutes and baroque guitars as well as guitars of the 19th century by makers such as Panormo and later popularized by Torres himself.
