Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was born in 1836 at Lemberg in Galicia.
At the age of 10, according to Schlichtegroll's narrative, the child Leopold witnessed a scene in which a woman of the former kind, a certain Countess Xenobia X., a relative of his own on the paternal side, played the chief part, and this scene left an undying impress on his imagination.
Sacher-Masoch insisted on seeing his correspondent before returning the letters, and with his eager thirst for romantic adventure he imagined that she was a married woman of the aristocratic world, probably a Russian countess, whose simple costume was a disguise.

Still, as von Wahl argued, welfare, perhaps especially for women, is well and truly in the eye of the beholder.
As von Wahl illustrated, the corporatist structure of German society - and here she drew attention to big business, the public sector, the political parties, and the trade unions - means that no institution exists to champion the right of an individual to full access to the labor market.

One of the founders of modern sex research, Richard von Krafft-Ebing, took as his task the exploration of a variety of sexual behaviors to assist the courts, and he did so as one convinced that sexual pathology was a real threat to society.
For example, Albert von Schrenck-Notzing (1872-1919), who adopted some of the theory, claimed that he could cure some homosexuality by hypnotism and suggestion therapy.
Von Schrenck-Notzing continued his experiments, and three years later he reported on some seventy other cases of homosexuals and patients with other stigmatized sexual behaviors; he claimed he had been able either to cure them or to reduce their urges.

Von Yhlen had also studied in Uppsala and is said to be the person who designed the Swedish student's cap.
von Yhlen (who took part in O. Thorell's expedition to Spitsbergen with Aeolus in1861) he did not take part of any of the marine expeditions, which were popular during his time, with the exception of the summer months 1865, which he spent dredging along the northern part of Bohuslän.

Do you know Oscar R. Schlag ?
Schlag advocated Leopold Szondi's claim that all homosexuality (latent or not) would sooner or later lead to to one form or another of paranoia - a surprising view, since Schlag was himself homosexual.
As a result he went to Switzerland - also on the look-out for mediumistic opportunities - but the Gestapo were aways trying to snatch him, even sending women out after him to try and seduce him out of the country, so he could be arrested.
The deterministic psychologist Leopold Szondi (1893-1986) analysed this mainly in his 'Schicksalsanalyse', Basle, 1944, 1948, 1965 where he called it "homosexual-paranoid linkage".

Prominent psychiatrists and psychologists condemned the spread of spiritualism as a psychic epidemic, and the spiritualists locked horns with the medical and psychiatric communities.
In 1885 Eduard von Hartmann wrote: "Spiritism is at present threatening to become a public calamity, to which every government has to direct its attention"[5].
On the conflict between the medical and spiritualistic communities, see J. Williams, "Psychical Research and Psychiatry in Late Victorian Britain: Trance as Ecstasy or Trance as Insanity," in The Anatomy of Madness: Essays in the History of Psychiatry, ed.
