Galtieri was the child of working class parents who were themselves children of poor Italian immigrants.
In early 1981 Galtieri visited the United States and was warmly received, as the Reagan administration viewed his regime as a bulwark against communism.

Leopoldo Fortunato Galtieri (Castelar, provincia de Buenos Aires, 15 de julio de 1926 – Buenos Aires, 12 de enero de 2003) fue un militar argentino que ocupó de facto la presidencia de la Nación entre 1981 y 1982, durante el autodenominado Proceso de Reorganización Nacional.
Tras 25 años de servicio, Galtieri fue nombrado comandante del cuerpo de Ingenieros del ejército en 1975, en la misma promoción que llevó a Jorge Rafael Videla a ocupar la comandancia en jefe de las Fuerzas Armadas.
