Abstract 5917 from Intl. Bot. Congress 1999   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Seven genera and 34 species of the family Lepidoziaceae were recognized, of which 11 species are new to the bryoflora of the present region.
The family Lepidoziaceae in the Malay Peninsula now comprises a total of 46 species belonging to 9 genera.
The bryoflora of the family Lepidoziaceae in Malay Peninsula was compared with those of the neighboring regions.

A richer habitat variety including wet and dry habitats, as well as its bigger area, seem to account for the higher number of bryophyte species in Galapagos Archipelago.
Among liverworts (50%), most of the elements belong to the families Lejeuneaceae, Plagiochilaceae, Lepidoziaceae and Radulaceae, and some of the species e.

Resynthesis experiments have shown that the fungal symbiont of Cryptothallus is an ectomycorrhizal associate of Betula suggesting an explanation for the apparently obligate nature of the association between the two.
Ascomycetous associations are found in the Cephaloziaceae and Lepidoziaceae.
Cross-inoculation experiments have shown that a typical mycorrhizal endophyte of ericaceous plants, Hymenoscyphus ericae will colonise the rhizoids and underground axes of these plants.

 Ericaceous Mycorrhizae
Hymenoscyphus is also apparently ectomycorrhizal on some conifers, and it is likely that having ericads as alternate hosts aids in the ability of conifers to colonize bogs.
has several other plant hosts, the most prominent of which are leafy liverworts in the families Adelanthaceae, Cephaloziellaceae, Cephaloziaceae, Calypogeiaceae and Lepidoziaceae.
Within these plants, the fungi forms mycorrhizal structures with their rhizoids in what appears to be a mutualistic relationship much like the one seen in the Ericaceae.

The Liverworts and Hornworts of Colorado
The leaf cells are uniformly thick-walled, without trigones.
The Lepidoziaceae is a family notable for having genera with variously terminally toothed or multi-cleft leaves, some having the leaves so deeply and narrowly divided that they look like cottony ropes!
The simplest type in the West is Basinet, which has the leaves with three terminal teeth, and variously toothed underleaves.

The hypothesis was tested that rhizoids of leafy liverworts of the families Lepidoziaceae, Calypogeiaceae, Cephaloziaceae and Cephaloziellaceae can be infected by the ascomycetous fungal endophyte Hymenoscyphus ericae which forms ericoid mycorrhiza with the major ericaceous genera Calluna, Erica, Rhododendron and Vaccinium.
The extent of the specificity of any such association was also examined by growing the liverworts with pure cultures of the putative ascomycetous ericoid endophyte Oidiodendron, with the basidiomycetous endophyte of orchids, Ceratobasidium cornigerum, and with several ectomycorrhizal fungi.
