Lepoglava (German: Schönhaupt) is a town in Varaždin County, northern Croatia, located southwest of Varaždin, west of Ivanec and northeast of Krapina, at around 46°12′38″N, 16°2′8″E.
Lepoglava is probably best known for hosting the main Croatian prison.
In 1854, a monastery of the Pauline Fathers was transformed by the authorities into a penitentiary (this order would wait until 2001 for a part of its property there to be returned to the bishopric).

Lepoglava is probably most well known as a site of a prison (where a number of important persons were held by regimes of both Yugoslavia in 20th century), but Lepoglava is also a cultural canter with a Pauline order monastery and is especially famous for the intricate lacework school.

Ivan Krstitelj Ranger (Tyrol 1700 - Lepoglava 1753), was a baroque painter.
Because the Paulist order paid particular attention to artistic and cultural activities within the order, he remained in Croatia from his 20s until his death, decorating sacral interiors and producing one of the most remarkable Baroque opuses of Central European mural painting.

The article concerns a letter from the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints that grants permission for the life and death of the servant of God Alojzije Stepinac to be presented as martyrdom, based upon available documents and testimony.
According to the article, Cardinal Stepinac's personal physicians are of the opinion that his illness, involving the multiplication of red blood cells, was in consequence of treatment he received in Lepoglava, where he was systematically poisoned.
The article refers to a 1993 autopsy of Stepinac in the presence of delegates from the Church among the Croats and the Holy See, showing that the cardinal was buried without a heart and that embalming had not been performed immediately after death, as requested by the Church authorities.

A group of 20 prisoners of war, mostly Serbs, in Lepoglava penitentiary, Croatia, are on a hunger strike since May 18, to protest verdicts of war criminals and long prison sentences, Documentation Center Veritas said on Tuesday.
The only demand of the hunger strikers in Lepoglava is to be turned over to the War Crimes Tribunal to stand trial in the Hague.
The demand to be turned over to the tribunal in the Hague was sent last summer by all the 72 prisoners, some of whom were charged and some already convicted for committing war crimes or classical crimes.

In the Croatian prison of Lepoglava there are 53 persons of Serb nationality, 40 of whom were sentenced for war crimes, while the remainder were sentenced for other crimes.
Strbac emphasized that since January of this year, the Croatian justice ministry has failed to respond and is obstructing requests by appropriate Serbia-Montenegro officials and Serb prisoners in Lepoglava to allow them to be transferred to Serbia-Montenegro to serve the remainder of their prison sentence in accordance with European conventions.
According to Strbac, Croatian authorities are also obstructing and delaying the process of exhuming the bodies of approximately 1,000 Serbs killed during Operations Flash and Storm in Krajina.

Ljajic will visit the inmates in Lepoglava on Friday, and, during the visit to Croatia, he will also discuss in more detail with the justice minister on concrete actions pertaining to the transfer of these SCG citizens, the SCG Council of Ministers Directorate for Information said.
