The warmouth (Lepomis gulosus) is a species of freshwater fish.
FishBase, however, follows the majority of the sources in considering the warmouth to be a member of Lepomis, Chaenobryttus being a subgenus thereof.
The origin of the common name "warmouth" is due to the stripes around the mouth of the fish bearing a resemblance to warpaint.

The goal of this project is to estimate the physiological and ecological impact of endocrine disruption on populations of sunfish (Lepomis spp.) spawning in the Lake Pontchartrain basin.
Field studies of endocrine disruption have shown that alterations in normal hormone synthesis and in sex differentiation occur in natural populations of fish in response to environmental contaminants.
We are characterizing reproductive cycles and juvenile recruitment of warmouth sunfish (Lepomis gulosus) spawning in in a hydrocarbon-contaminated bayou, Bayou Trepagnier in the LaBranche wetlands, relative to those spawning in an uncontaminated bayou, Stinking Bayou, in the Maurepas wetlands.
