ADW: What is in a Scientific Name?
For example, if bluegill sunfish are given the scientific name Lepomis macrochirus, no other animal species can be given the same name.
The generic epithet is the name of the genus (singular of genera) to which bluegill sunfish belong, the genus Lepomis.
There are other species of sunfish in the genus Lepomis, examples are Lepomis cyanellus (green sunfish), Lepomis megalotis (longear sunfish), and Lepomis gibbosus (pumpkinseed sunfish).

Lepomis, the generic name, is Greek and means "scaled gill cover." The species epithet macrochirus is also Greek and means "large hand" which may refer to the body shape or its size.
Bluegills may be distinguished from other sunfish by the dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin, vertical bars on their sides, and a relatively small mouth.
Three subspecies are present: Lepomis macrochirus macrochirus which is native to the northeastern half of the state, Lepomis macrochirus speciosus which is native to the central, southern, and western portions of the state, and Lepomis macrochirus purpurescens, a native of Atlantic coast states which has been introduced widely as a sport and forage fish.

It is theoretically possible for all Lepomis sunfish to hybridize with each other, however, some hybrids do not result in nature due to sizes of males and females, temporal mating season displacement, and differences in species mating signals.

Hybridization of male warmouths with females of the three Lepomis species resulted in partial or complete lethals, suggesting that in the warmouth the male is the heterogametic sex.
The Lepomis species have such high reproductive capacities and survival capabilities that they commonly become so abundant that they are unable to grow to sizes large enough to be of value to fishermen.
