Leporidae. Who is Leporidae? What is Leporidae? Where is Leporidae? Definition of Leporidae. Meaning of Leporidae.
Leporids are the approximately 50 species of rabbits and hares which form the family Leporidae.
Leporids differ from pikas in having short furry tails, and elongated ears and hind legs.
Leporids are native across the world except in Oceania where their introduction has wiped out at least dozens of species of marsupials unique to Australia.

The zygomatic arch is slender, not expanded vertically as it is in leporids.
Leporids have clavicle, but it is rudimentary and does not limit movement of the scapula.

The fecal material is of two types: moist “night” pellets that are expelled and eaten directly from the anus (leporids) or from the floor of the den (pikas) and dry pellets which are not eaten.
Leporids are a very successful group occupying a variety of habitats over broad areas.
Leporids of the genus Lepus and some other genera are called hares.

Leporid bodies are flattened and long with elongated hind legs.
Their ears are long and quite mobile and the tail is usually the short, well-known "powder-puff." The eyes are large and placed high on the side of the skull.
Leporids evaporative-cool by licking their fore-feet and then rubbing their ears, wetting the thin, highly vascularized skin.

The pygmy rabbit is an small endemic leporid that is an extreme sagebrush habitat specialist, dependent on sagebrush for 99% of its winter diet and for critical cover from predators, while requiring deep soil sites for construction of burrows.
Should populations of these indigenous leporids fall victim to extinction, no natural recolonization will be possible, due to great expanses of fragmented, inhospitable habitat and insurmountable barriers to dispersal.
The pygmy rabbit is North America’s smallest leporid, and one of the smallest leporids in the world, yet it endures harsh winters in many portions of its range while subsisting on a diet of 99% sagebrush (Katzner 1994).

Rabbits are born naked, blind, and live inside of a nest lined with fur their first few days, while Hares are born with hair (perhaps an explanation of the name), open eyes, and they become mobile within a few minutes of birth.
The ear pinnae of leporids are generally longer than wide, the limbs are long, and the hindlimbs are longer than the forelimbs and in most are created for running.
The species of leporids vary immensely in the way they move.

The pygmy rabbit is the smallest Leporid in North America, with mean adult weights from 375 to 462 grams (0.83 to 1.02 pounds), and lengths from 23.5 to 29.5 centimeters (cm) (9.3 to 11.6 inches (in)) (Orr 1940; Janson 1946; Wilde 1978; Gahr 1993; WDFW 1995).
The pygmy rabbit is distinguishable from other Leporids by its small size, short ears, gray color, small hind legs, and lack of white on the tail.
The pygmy rabbit is believed to be one of only two Leporids in North America that digs its own burrows (Nelson 1909; Green and Flinders 1980a; WDFW 1995), the other being the volcano rabbit (Romerolagus diazi) found in central Mexico (Durrell and Mallinson 1970).

Leporids have long ears, long hind legs and bulging eyes that are situated on the sides of their heads and allow these creatures a wide range of vision.
Unlike most other mammals, leporid females are generally larger than the males.

After initial declines, pygmy rabbit populations may not have the same capacity for rapid increases in numbers as other Leporids due to their close association with specific components of sagebrush ecosystems, and the relatively limited availability of their preferred habitats (Wilde 1978; Green and Flinders 1980b; WDFW 1995a).

All leporids feed on vegetation, such as grass and other plants, which has a relatively low food value.
There are three species of Leporid in Ireland; the Irish hare (Lepus timidus hibernicus), the brown hare (Lepus europeaeus, but sometimes referred to as Lepus capensis) and the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Food habits and nest features of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), praire falcons (Falco mexicanus), red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), and ferruginous hawks (B. regalis) were studied near Medicine Bow, Wyoming during 1981 and 1982.
Praire falcons were the most specialized and ferruginous hawks the most versatile raptor species in terms of food habits and use of nest sites.
In spite of high levels of overlap, detailed analyses suggested possible partitioning of leporid and sciurid prey and differential use of trees and cliffs as nest sites.

 Hares and Cottontails - 2
As a standard field technique, applicable to all leporids anywhere in the province, a systematic detection transect for sign of cottontails or hares in appropriate habitats is recommended.
Chapman and Willner (1986) state that the presence of cottontails and hares can be determined by "activity signs"(i.e., fecal pellets, tracks, active runways and trails, feeding sites, and skeletal remains).
Since there is relatively little overlap of the ranges of cottontails and hares in B.C., sign of leporids could usually be assigned to a particular species with a reasonable degree of certainty.

Leporids, yes...I couldn't think of a good name for the little guardians of the Orycalopes,(and Oryctolagus Cuniculus is a cottontail rabbit) so I decided to borrow a bunny-oriented word, the family name Leporidae, and just call that good.
They are trained to eat anything that isn't a bunny demon, which is why Rondo wanted Mye to stay with Anthony, for they may have eaten her, as well as the other "strangers" they brought in.

Continued culture was possible because of their extremely long telomeric arrays.
