 Death Leprosy by Matt Tulini
On this, their second album, their sound is refined a bit, the lyrics more intelligent (but still gory), and the music remains brutal.
Since this album Death has always been a two-guitar band, and Death has morphed into a "technical death" band, complete with flashy solos, melodic chops, and even a catchy hook here and there.
Death's "raw" period only lasted for their first two albums, so this one is a gem indeed.

And the mania for death, somebody would add: because he not only gives his band a simple and unambiguous moniker, but his first records ('Scream Bloody Gore' and this 'Leprosy') are an absolute triumph of sonic extremism and monstrosities thrown to cover and lyrics.
It's the birth of Death Metal, the thrash raised to another power (but without religious, philosophical and political implications of Black Metal) and purified of every remnant of funny and amused attitude, to be exclusively death, physical decline and pain.
With this all the 'Leprosy' offspring is still immature, but with an absolutely untenable impact.

"Leprosy" is the second album from the Florida Death quartet.
Last year their legendary debut "Scream Bloody Gore" was released, the album everybody had been waiting for for years.
SBG undoubtedly was a very strong album, but still missed the aggression that made the old Death demo's (despite the poor sound quality) so very special.

This album was published in November of 1991, 10 years and a month before Chuck lost his struggle with a malicious growth on his spine.
This album takes the general strengths from the previous three albums and blends them together to make a unique sound with the complexity of prog metal, the good old nastiness of death metal, and a melodic touch that gives the band more of a Scandinavian sound.

I think part of the other thing that makes this album a bit of a less than great album is the fact that the riffs are kind of repetitive.
It’s good, but compared to other Death albums it doesn’t rank high for me. I still think that Chuck was trying to figure out at this point where he wanted to go on the musical path.

Considered to be one of the earliest death metal albums, but to be honest, I think this is just thrash taken up one notch past what bands like Kreator, Sepultura, and Destruction were doing.
Of all the Death albums I own, this is probably my least favorite as it is really not up to the standards of "Individual Thought Patterns" or especially the masterpiece "Sound of Perseverance." The stereotypical blood, gore, and Satan lyrics are especially not to my liking.
After sacking his entire band from the first album, you'd think that the sound on the band's second album would be completely different.

The drumming stood out on here a lot more, it was good on the first album but on here there were a lot of interesting combinations of breakdown beats and rhythms comprised throughout the flow of one song.
This is a killer album though, Death returned and returned with a sickening vengeance.

The band were put on hold however, when Chuck Schuldiner relocated back from LA to his native Florida and promptly recruited Rick, Bill and Terry to record the second Death Album "Leprosy", for Combat Records.
Though released much later than many of their death metal contemporaries, all the songs recorded were from the widely circulated demos/live tapes of 5 years previously, including "Corpsegrinder", a simple but effective track which featured on Death's first demo but was actually written by Rick and Kam.
The album showcased a more varied metal style, still with the trademark guitar heaviness, but was poorly received by fans, though the inspired cover of Concrete Blonde's "Bloodletting" is an undiscovered classic to this day.
