HISTORY OF MEXICO - Lerdo de Tejada: Jacobin to Liberal Elitist - BY JIM TUCK IN MEXCONNECT Access Mexico Connect - ...
Lerdo de Tejada was born in Jalapa, Veracruz, in 1823, the son of a Spanish father and a creole mother.
A bachelor, Lerdo had a reputation as a ladies' man. This led to accusations that he was making up for time he had lost while living a celibate life in the seminary.
Both sides mustered their forces but Lerdo was at a disadvantage because he had cut the military budget and treated a number of leading generals with contempt.

Miguel Lerdo de Tejada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Miguel Lerdo de Tejada (July 6, 1812 - March 22, 1861) was a Mexican statesman, and a leader of the Revolution of Ayutla.
Because of the disruptions of the War of Reform and the French Intervention that wracked Mexico from 1858 to 1867, few properties were actually sold as a direct result of the Ley Lerdo; most of the disruptions attributed to that law actually occurred later, under similar legislation passed during the regime of Porfirio Diaz.
Lerdo resigned from his position as Treasury Secretary when Comonfort's successor, Benito Juarez, proposed suspending the payment of Mexico's foreign debt in 1860.

Articles: Ley Lerdo - Historical Text Archive
The Ley Lerdo was a piece of legislation calculated by Miguel Lerdo de Tejada that shook the whole structure of Mexican society.
Lerdo himself believed that less than half the value of eligible ecclesiastical property had been transferred in that period (Hamnett 163).
Although the Ley Lerdo was very good in theory, the creators of this law failed to recognize the unsettled condition of political affairs with the people and the church, the scale of opposition likely to rise, the opportunities provided for foreign speculators, and the generally complicated procedures involved.
