This is partly due to the fact that blues historians tend to overlook artists that weren't centered in Chicago, and also partly because Carr died at the young age of 30 in 1935.
Leroy Carr was born in Nashville, Tennessee on March 27, 1905.
The last song that Carr recorded was a solo number, the prophetic "Six Cold Feet in the Ground." When the Vocalian label came calling two months later, Leroy had already died of complications from his alcohol abuse.

 Leroy Carr
Carr was the most influential male blues singer and songwriter of the first half of the 20th century, but he was nothing like the current stereotype of an early bluesman.
Carr's lyrics were carefully written, blending soulful poetry with wry humor, and his music had a light, lilting swing that could shift in a moment to a driving boogie.
It is no coincidence that the audience that hailed both Carr and Waters as up-to-date stars was overwhelmingly fl, while the one that rejected Carr as over-sophisticated and reinvented Waters as a link to Robert Johnson was overwhelmingly white.

Leroy Carr Discography at CD Universe
Leroy Carr was an early American blues singer-songwriter/pianist.
With Scrapper Blackwell accompanying him on guitar, pianist Leroy Carr released a series of suave "uptown" blues records in the late '20s and early '30s that introduced many listeners to the genre.
Carr and Blackwell's recordings straddled the fence separating blues and jazz in much the same way as did the recordings of their contemporary, guitarist Lonnie Johnson.

Born in Nashville, Leroy Carr was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, and taught himself piano as a child, becoming an itinerant blues musician by his mid teens.
Throughout the late '20s and early '30s, Leroy Carr was one of the most popular (and commercially successful) bluesmen in America, but just as his professional career was climbing, he began to sink deeper and deeper into alcoholism.
As all of Leroy Carr's recordings have long-since become public domain, there are several good budget compilations of his classic sides available.

Carr was one of the most famous and self-debasing artists in the history of the blues.
Carr’s voice was a perfect match for the blues, high-pitched and haunted with a fatalistic resolve that mirrored the sorrowful content of the songs.
On the final session Carr’s booze-induced difficulties are readily apparent in his playing and made even more audible by Blackwell’s absence on the concluding four tracks.

Ironically, what Carr’s first fans loved about him—his pop feel, his smooth, crooning voice, and his clear diction—made him anathema in the 1960s blues revival to young fans who idealized the blues as tragic myth instead of artful entertainment.
You’d think Carr would have a prominent spot in the tragic blues pantheon; he drank himself to death at the tender age of 30.
The sound here is great; Carr was so popular that unlike most bluesmen of his time, he recorded for big labels that used the best recording equipment and record-pressing material.

Some consider Leroy Carr the first urban bluesman, or at least the first truly great urban blues piano player, influencing generations of players from Roosevelt Sykes to Otis Spann.
Born in Nashville and raised in Indianapolis, Leroy Carr had something of the urban sophisticate about his relaxed, laid-back playing and singing style, with the powerful rhythm guitar and blues-holler backing vocals of his longtime partner Francis "Scrapper" Blackwell adding just the right touch of country grit.
Carr and Blackwell were wildly popular in their time, until Carr drank himself to death in 1935 at the age of 30.

After all, Carr was certainly more popular and influential than Johnson during their lifetimes.
Sure, Carr sang about unfaithful women, assmen, and murder, but he didn't have the fevered intensity of Son House or the garbled willfulness of Charlie Patton.
Without the mythic bluesman's struggle for his soul and low on animal ferocity, Carr the entertainer was passed over by white audiences for those others who better matched their romantic notions of another world.

At the beginning of the 20s Leroy Carr decided to work as pianist and singer in night clubs or private parties.
Probably, it was just during one of these crazy nights that Leroy Carr knew the guitar player, Francis “Scrapper” Blackwell.

Knowledgeable fans of urban piano blues will undoubtedly raise an eyebrow at those recording dates, as Leroy Carr died in 1935.
Dodgy name aside, Shine is a more-than-adequate boogie-woogie player, a bit rougher than the more sophisticated Carr, but an exciting soloist with a nice rough tone.
Listening to the two players in tandem like this, it's easy to see just how influential Carr's urban, sophisticated style of piano playing was throughout the '30s.

Pianist and singer Leroy Carr's name may pop up less frequently than others from the blues' golden age -- such as Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson.
But during Carr's brief recording career from 1928 to 1935, he was as well-known, or even better-known than any of them, and his influence was long-lasting.
In his understated way he was one of the best and most distinctive blues singers who ever lived.
