Leroy J. Alexanderson, the last skipper of the superliner United States, dies (HamptonRoads.com/Pilot Online)
Alexanderson’s career spanned the zenith of U.S. maritime power: As a junior officer in the 1930s, he served in a fleet that had all but disappeared after World War I, skippered Liberty and Victory ships during World War II, and commanded the SS America, the largest prewar U.S. liner, after the war.
Alexanderson had held the most prestigious job in shipping for five years when the ship was laid up in Newport News in 1969.
Alexanderson returned to the merchant fleet after the war, climbing through the ranks of United States Lines and eventually becoming executive officer, and later commander, of the 623-foot America.
