The Leroy P. Steele Prizes are awarded every year by the American Mathematical Society, for distinguished research work and writing in the field of mathematics.
The prizes have been given since 1970, from a bequest of Leroy P. Steele, and were set up in honor of George David Birkhoff, William Fogg Osgood and William Caspar Graustein.

The Leroy P. Steele Prizes were established in 1970 in honor of George David Birkhoff, William Fogg Osgood, and William Caspar Graustein and are endowed under the terms of a bequest from Leroy P. Steele.
The prize is awarded every three years for an outstanding research article to have appeared in one of the AMS primary research journals during the six calendar years ending a full year before the meeting at which the prize is awarded.
This prize was established in 1967 in honor of Professor Norbert Wiener and was endowed by a fund from the Department of Mathematics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In years when awards are made, the prize winners are chosen at plenary sessions of the academies in the spring, and the prizes are awarded at a joint ceremony in the autumn.
Victor Guillemin was awarded the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement at the 109th Annual Meeting of the AMS in Baltimore in January 2003.

These prizes were established in 1970 in honor of George David Birkhoff, William Fogg Osgood, and William Caspar Graustein, and are endowed under the terms of a bequest from Leroy P. Steele.
From 1970 to 1976 one or more prizes were awarded each year for outstanding published mathematical research; most favorable consideration was given to papers distinguished for their exposition and covering broad areas of mathematics.
That cycle would have the 2008 prize awarded in discrete mathematics (discrete mathematics alternates with logic every five years), then analysis in 2009, algebra in 2010, applied mathematics in 2011, geometry/topology in 2012 and then logic in 2013, renewing the cycle.

Princeton Township resident, Robert P. Langlands, the Hermann Weyl Professor of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, has been awarded the $150,000 Frederic Esser Nemmers Prize in Mathematics.
He shared the 1995-96 Wolf Prize in Mathematics with Princeton University professor Andrew Wiles (famous for his proof of Fermat's Last Theorem), and, last year, the American Mathematical Society awarded him the 2005 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Seminal Contribution to Research.

 NYU Today News: Courant's Greengard awarded Steele Prize for research
Leslie F. Greengard, a professor of mathematics at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, has been awarded the 2001 Leroy P. Steele Prize in recognition of his seminal contribution to research.
The announcement was made at the beginning of the year by the American Mathematical Society, which administers the Steele Prizes.
Much of his work has been in the development of "analysis-based" fast algorithms such as the FMM for gravitation and electromagnetics and the Fast Gauss Transform for diffusion.
