Les Baxter (March 14, 1922 - January 15, 1996) studied piano at the Detroit Conservatory before moving to Los Angeles for further studies at Pepperdine College.
In the 90s Baxter was widely celebrated, alongside Martin Denny (for whom he had written "Quiet Village") and Arthur Lyman Group, as one of the progenitors of what had become known as the "exotica" movement.

Les was not particularly fond of rock ’n’ roll (except that he liked the Beach Boys and Petula Clark), but he was so bowled over by Aretha that he started laughing out loud.
Les didn’t relate to the energy of rock ‘n’ roll or the extended improvising in jazz— he was interested in composition and orchestration.
Stravinsky was Les Baxter’s all-time icon, and we spent many an evening at the house on Mel Avenue listening to Stravinsky’s Symphony In C — kind of an odd choice as a Stravinsky favorite.

Martin Denny is probably better-known than Les Baxter in the genre of "exotica" for two reasons: he was the bandleader at the world's most famous "tiki" restaurant, and his album covers featured attractive, scantily-clad models in exotic settings.

On his early-'50s singles Baxter was relatively straightforward, performing versions of standards like the number one hits "Unchained Melody" and "The Poor People of Paris," but on his albums he experimented with all sorts of world musics, adapting them for his orchestra.
As he was recording his exotica albums, Baxter was also the musical director for the radio show Halls of Ivy, plus Abbott & Costello radio shows; he also composed over 100 film scores, concentrating on horror movies and teenage musicals and comedies, though he also did dramas like Giant.

Baxter's experimentation with "foriegn" sounds and instruments -- such as the theremin -- set him apart from his contemporaries and pioneered the way for new styles in jazz and rock.s It was during this time that he produced the first album by the first lady of exotica, Yma Sumac.

Les Baxter's non-exotic works are compiled on Baxter's Best (Capitol, 1996) - which overlaps with Exotic Moods only on "Quiet Village," the exotic national anthem written by Baxter but popularized by Denny - and also on The Pop Side (Collectors Choice, 2000).
Baxter's pop stuff is tame but playful; "The Poor People Of Paris," in particular, is positively giddy, but some of the songs teeter precariously on the edge of elevator music.

4/27/00: Les Baxter v. John Williams Lawsuit Recap
We recently printed a letter asking about a lawsuit that happened a while back involving Les Baxter and John Williams over the theme to E.T. Reader Robert Delaney was helpful enough to pull the court data as to exactly what happened.
However, in 1984 the judge ruled that to the layman, "Joy" and E.T. were not substantially similar, and it was not necessary to submit the case to a jury trial.
It's too bad that this probably disturbed Les Baxter to no end and that a lot of time and money was spent litigating...
