Austin Chronicle: Texas Documentary Tour: Les Blank
Blank got interested in Hopkins when he heard him perform in Los Angeles in 1967, the legendary bluesman's music touching a sympathetic chord in a recently divorced filmmaker who was then struggling to find his professional bliss.
Les Blank: For one thing, it's short; you can watch it over and over again and it's constructed so that one scene flows from one to the next without any problem and yet each scene seems like a surprise.

Blank, a soft-spoken man of 69 who still retains the Southern accent of his native Florida, says this is the first time his films have been shown in an environmental context, but he can see the connection.
In 1997, Blank began filming a Berkeley-based tea importer who, on his visits to Chinese tea merchants, found himself trying to explain why pesticides, industrial tea-growing operations and concern with quantity over quality were at odds with the tastes of his high-end customers.

Speaking on the phone from his El Cerrito home, Blank is polite, friendly, soft-spoken--just the sort of person one would imagine slipping easily into the cultural inner sanctums of various ethnic and social subcultures with his trusty 16mm camera in hand.
As Blank explains it, his own distinctive filmmaking style evolved out of a stint he spent making the sort of cheesy instructional films familiar to anyone who's been forced to sit behind a balky 16mm projector in a fifth-grade classroom.
In the planning stages for Blank are projects on radio storyteller Garrison Keillor, a Romany (Gypsy) musician/dancer living in the Rajasthan region of India, and a Marin man who journeys annually to the mountains of western China to buy tea.

Les Blank's Burden of Dreams admittedly had it easier than most.
Blank's film includes the only available record of some of the unused scenes with Robards and Mick Jagger, who left for a concert tour after all the delays, doubtless with some relief.
Part of that truth is that Herzog seemed to identify with Fitzgerald (called Fitzcarraldo by the natives), and certainly his plan to make a film in such a place was almost as crazy as the Irishman's opera house daydream.

 Les Blank Bio
In 1989-1990 Blank was the distinguished filmmaker-in-residence at San Diego State University and in 1991, adjunct assistant professor in film at the University of California, Berkeley.
For Blank, who’s been making his own kind of movies since the Coens were in grade school, it’s the idea of "culture" as coming from the "folk" (or at least the defiant eccentric) that gets him going in general.
More importantly, Blank structures his movies as tight little mosaics: Each follows pretty much the same pattern of early action, which is explained by snatches of conversation or seemingly casual interviews, then builds to a fuller and deeper picture of the issue by film’s end.

Documentarian Les Blank, who filmed Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe, trained his cameras on Herzog again, as the eccentric German filmmaker made his epic, Fitzcarraldo, in the Amazon rainforest of Peru.
Violent tribal disputes and unpredictable weather hinder the shoot, but the biggest obstacle is Herzog's own quixotic and dangerous determination to film one antique boat smashing down the Amazonian rapids, and the dragging of an identical boat over a mountain from one river to another.
Blank interviews members of the cast and crew, including the impoverished Indian extras, and captures the troubles of the seemingly cursed production, but his interviews with Herzog are the focal point of the film.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Les Blank - 1982 - Burden of Dreams Movies Review
Les Blank's documentary Burden of Dreams about the making of Fitzcarraldo parallels Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse, as both chronicle the process of making a film that is plagued with nearly insurmountable obstacles.
Both projects suffered from budget constraints, casting problems, and uncooperative weather, but Francis Ford Coppola never had to deal with the political maneuvering and warring Amazon tribes that forced Werner Herzog to pull up stakes and start his project all over in a new location before his film crew was slaughtered.
The Criterion Collection's release of Blank's documentary is very timely, as it co-incides with the theatrical run of Herzog's documentary Grizzly Man, which chronicles the last year's of charismatic Timothy Treadwell, a failed actor who dreamed of becoming one with the grizzly bear.

Just as the film Herzog is making shows a man (Fitzcarraldo, played by Klaus Kinski) whose passion for opera drives him to a mad and self-destructive act of incredible hubris, the film Blank has made shows a man (Herzog) whose passion for his own art drives him to a similar mad and self-destructive act.
