This area has Michigan's greatest concentration of islands, and islands have long been important places in the area economy, starting with the Ojibwa maple sugar center on Sugar Island to today's second homes on many islands.
The channel, mostly in Canada, is formed on the south by Drummond Island in Michigan and in Ontario by Cockburn Island and long, irregular Manitoulin Island.
