JamBase | LES CLAYPOOL: THE ART OF FALLING
When Les Claypool picks up the phone, I halfway expect him to speak in a deep baritone instead of the elastic Looney Tunes sound on his records.
Claypool, one of the most distinctive and influential bassists in the past 30 years, first broke into the general consciousness in the early '90s with Primus, a hardcore-fueled power-trio to rival Rush or Cream but infused with a drunken, scatological humor that made them seem like an underground comic book come life, something R.
In the last half-decade, Claypool has experienced the most diverse creative patch of his career, and 2006 looks to be the most intense, varied year yet.

The Les Claypool story begins on September 29, 1963, when he was born in Richmond, CA.
As a teenager, Claypool met fellow student Kirk Hammett (yes, the Kirk Hammett of Metallica fame), who turned him onto such rock acts as Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and Led Zeppelin.
Although Hammett asked Claypool to join a band he was in, he opted for another group in his high school, progressive metallists Blind Illusion, while broadening his musical horizons by playing in jazz and swing bands.

Fans grieved when Les Claypool put his funk-metal band Primus on ice, after he declared that he had reached an aesthetic dead end.
Claypool's band of collaborators, including original Primus guitarist Todd Huth, Critters Buggin' saxophonist Skerik, Rat Dog's Jay Lane and Jeff Chimenti, Pearl Jam/Chili Pepper's skinbeater Jack Irons, and newcomer Eenor, turn out 70 minutes of live alchemy with the sum so much greater than its seemingly disparate parts.
Les is probably one of the best bass players ever, and, to me, his work in the Frog Brigade shows that off better than his work in Primus did.

NPR : Les Claypool: Innovative and Unpredictable
World Cafe, September 18, 2006 ·; Bassist and songwriter Les Claypool is among the most innovative and unpredictable musicians to emerge from the '90s alternative rock scene, mixing various influences -- from Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin to Stanley Clarke and Larry Graham -- to create his own style.
Claypool has influenced many young musicians with his outrageous playing and warped sense of humor.
Since then, Claypool has headlined many side projects with colorful names, including Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel, Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Oysterhead and Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains.

It was around this time (early to mid-'80s) that Claypool began demoing his own original compositions, which would become the impetus for Primus.
By 1989, a new Primus lineup was formed -- Claypool, LaLonde, and new drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander -- and not long afterward, their first album was issued, the live set Suck on This.
