Fauvism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Les Fauves (French for wild beasts), a short-lived and loose grouping of early Modern artists, emphasized painterly qualities, and the use of deep color, over the representational values retained by Impressionism even with its focus on light and the moment.
Les Fauves paintings also feature flat patterns and anti-naturalism.
One of the fundamentals of the Fauves was expressed in 1888 by Paul Gauguin to Paul Sérusier,

Les Fauves (French for "wild beasts"), a short-lived movement of early Modernist art, emphasized paint itself and the use of deep color over the representational values retained by Impressionism, even with its focus on light and the moment.
The mantra of the Fauves was a quote from Paul Gauguin to Paul Serusier[?] in 1888 to the effect that if the trees looked yellow to the artist then painted a bright yellow they must be.
The name, which translates as "wild beasts," was given the group by an art critic following their 1905 seminal show in Paris.

Fauvism, French Fauvisme, style of painting that flourished in France from 1898 to 1908; it used pure, brilliant colour, applied straight from the paint tubes in an aggressive, direct manner to create a sense of an explosion on the canvas.
The Fauves painted directly from nature as the Impressionists had before them, but their works were invested with a strong expressive reaction to the subjects they painted.
The leader of the group was Henri Matisse, who had arrived at the Fauve style after careful, critical study of the masters of Postimpressionism Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat.

Henri Matisse Biography - Renoir Fine Art Inc.
Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France on December 31, 1869.
Together, the group was dubbed les fauves (literally, "the wild beasts") because of the extremes of emotionalism in which they seemed to have indulged, their use of vivid colors, and their distortion of shapes.
While he was regarded as a leader of radicalism in the arts, Matisse was beginning to gain the approval of a number of influential critics and collectors, including the American expatriate writer Gertrude Stein and her family.

The Fauves exhibited together in the Salon d’Automne of 1905 and their name was given to them by the critic Louis Vuxcelles, who pointed to a quatrocentro-like sculpture in the middle of the same gallery and exclaimed: “Donatello au milieu des fauves?” (Donatello among the wild beasts?).

The critic Louis Vauxcelles, on visiting the show, called the painters the "Wild Beasts," or "Les Fauves"; the pejorative remark was exploited by hostile critics, and the name stuck.
Although Fauvism was a short-lived movement, it was influential; the German expressionists, particularly Wassily Kandinsky and Alexey von Jawlensky in Munich, and the Die Brucke group in Dresden were heavily indebted to it.

Daniel Auteuil was born in Algeria in 1950, when his parents, both opera singers were on a tour there.
He was as successful in lavish period dramas, such as La Reine Margot and Le Bossu, as he was in romantic dramas, including La Séparation and Un Coeur en hiver.
In many of his films, Auteuil is cast as the solitary outsider or the unlucky inexperienced romantic, scarred by emotional traumas but capable of displaying great passion and warmth.

An intensely personal film, Les Nuits fauves tackles the whole issue of AIDS and the hedonistic youth culture with dazzling, indeed shocking, originality and honesty.
The film is based on Cyril Collard’s 1989 novel, which is a closely autobiographical account of Collard’s own life after he discovered he was HIV positive.
Collard’s first film was, sadly, to be his last, but he has unquestionably left his mark on French cinema.

They astonished viewers at the 1905 Salon d'Automne: the art critic Louis Vauxcelles saw their bold paintings surrounding a conventional sculpture of a young boy, and remarked that it was like a Donatello ``parmi les fauves'' (among the wild beasts).
The painterly freedom of the Fauves and their expressive use of color gave splendid proof of their intelligent study of van Gogh's art.

Along with writers Vincent Borel and Guillaume Dustan, he became a key figure in the struggle to revise attitudes toward AIDS in art.
Principally known for his highly controversial autobiographical novel and subsequent film Les Nuits fauves (Savage Nights), Collard also garnered a great deal of critical acclaim in France and England for his unapologetic portrayals of both bisexuality and HIV.
(The English translation, Savage Nights, was published in 1994.) The main themes of Les Nuits fauves are bisexuality and the search for meaning in contemporary life in the shadow of AIDS.
