Many of the arms used by the mob when it attacked the Bastille on 14 July 1789 were taken from Les Invalide on the morning of that day.
The most significant event in the history of Les Invalides however, is unquestionably the return of the body of Napoléon in 1840.
On 15 December 1840 a state funeral was held, and despite a winter snowstorm, the hearse proceeded from the Arc de Triomphe down the Champs-Elysées, across the Place de la Concorde to the Esplanade and finally to the cupola in St Jerome's Chapel until the tomb - designed by Visconti - was completed.

On the north front of Les Invalides (illustration, left) Hardouin-Mansart's chapel dome is large enough to dominate the long facade yet harmonizes with Libéral Bruant's door under an arched pediment.
To the north the courtyard (cour d'honneur), is extended by a wide public esplanade (Esplanade des Invalides) where the embassies of Austria and Finland are neighbors of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all forming one of the grand open spaces in the heart of Paris.

Les Invalides : Paris : Napoleon Bonaparte : Tomb : Burial Place
Les Invalides features heavily in the storming of the Bastille as its store of 28,000 weapons was stolen by the mob that attacked the fortress on 14 July 1789.
Les Invalides is probably best known, however, for being the final resting place of Napoleon Bonaparte.
The funeral procession moved from the Arc de Triomphe down the Champs-Elysées, across the Place de la Concorde to the Esplanade and then to St Jerome's Chapel where his body lay until his final tomb was completed in 1861.

A vast complex, now encompassing four museums and two churches, Les Invalides was established as a lodging and hospital for wound military veterans in 1670; it once accommodated 7,000 soldiers.
Les Invalides is surmounted by the soaring gilt cupola of the Dôme Church, and as a building rivals the Louvre in terms of sheer size and Gallic self-assurance; it's also the foremost 17th-century landmark in Paris.
As a collection of sarcophagi, Les Invalides has few equals, and the entire building is an oddly riveting monument to grandiloquence.
