Les Misérables (translated variously from French as The Miserable Ones, The Wretched, The Poor Ones, The Victims) (1862) is a novel by French author Victor Hugo.
Les Misérables is known to many through its numerous stage and screen adaptations, of which the most famous is the stage musical of the same name, commonly known as "Les Mis" (pronounced /leɪ mɪz/).

Notes for the study of Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables"
If “Les Misérables" is a plea for and a symbol of philosophical, social and political change, nowhere is the difference between the old and the new better encapsulated than in the clash between Javert and Valjean.
Clearly, with its constant emphasis on such elements, “Les Misérables" is the very embodiment of this move towards an age of understanding and compassion, and a step away from a time of rigidity and dogma.
"Les Misérables" is often accused of being over-dependent on coincidence, and this is undoubtedly true.

Based on Victor Hugo's somber and sprawling novel,; the musical Les Miserables brings to the stage the tale of Jean Valjean, a man who is determined to survive and to do good in the face of vengeful persecution.
The sacrificial deaths of Fantine, Eponine, and the students are among the most emotional moments in the show, without which Valjean's noble death at the end of the show would not have its dramatic impact.
Les Miserables opened in 1985 at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Barbican Theatre in London.

 Filmtracks: Les Misérables (Basil Poledouris)
One aspect of the resounding power of Les Misérables is the similarities to the melodic, thematically dominated nature of Broadway musicals.
Poledouris' recent themes have been awkwardly simplistic, however the main theme for Les Misérables is a return to the complexity of Farewell to the King.
I fell in love with this theme instantly, and even though it has only two appearances in full during the entire CD (one of which is available in audio below), variations of it make frequent and welcome visits.
