Les Sylphides - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Les Sylphides is often confused with La Sylphide, another ballet of similar name, also involving the mythical sylph, or forest sprite.
Les Sylphides is a short, non-narrative ballet choreographed by Michel Fokine to music by Frédéric Chopin.
Les Sylphies was originally performed by the Ballets Russes, with principal dancers Tamara Karsavina, Vaslaw Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova, and Alexandra Baldina.

Les Sylphides is a poetic reverie brought to life by ballet technique that is evanescent and timeless.
Even though Les Sylphides did not fit directly into the avant-garde mould of the company, it remains one of the purest, most classically based works of that era and the most famous.
Les Sylphides was on the first program presented by the National Ballet at its debut performance on November 12, 1951 at Toronto’s Eaton Auditorium.

Les Sylphides, a one-act romantic reverie, is a plotless work in which a poet dances with ghostly sylphs in a forest.
Les Sylphides, under the title Reverie Romantique: Ballet sur la musique de Chopin, was given its first performance at the Maryinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg on March 8, 1908, with Olga Preobrajenska, Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina and Vaslav Nijinsky.
Les Sylphides was given its United States premiere by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes at the Century Theatre, New York on January 20, 1916, danced by Lydia Lopoukhova, Lubov Tchernicheva, Xenia Maclezova and Adolph Bolm.

Dutch National - Marc Haegeman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
It’s somewhat unfortunate that the Dutch National Ballet brought "Petrushka", "Les Sylphides" and "The Firebird" (in that order) under the less than appropriate title “Russian fairytales” instead of referring to Diaghilev or the Ballets Russes.
"Les Sylphides" can hardly be called a fairytale and the ballet that fits best into that category, "The Firebird", is shown in yet another reworking by artistic director Ted Brandsen, who stripped the story of its traditional fairytale character by turning it into a no-brainer metaphor for the coming of spring.
Yet while some members of the audience considered the costumes for "Petrushka" dusty and old, the opening of "Les Sylphides" was always greeted with applause.

The ballets were choreographed—or, in the case of Les Sylphides, drastically revised—under the aegis of Serge Diaghilev and his legendary Ballets Russes and were danced by the likes of Nijinsky, Pavlova, and Karsavina.
Attempts are made the world over, but ABT has a particular interest in doing justice to Fokine, Les Sylphides and Petrouchka having been staged for the company by the choreographer himself early in the 1940s, when ABT was merely Ballet Theatre—and newborn.
The ideal Les Sylphides, the Sylphides of my dreams—I’ve seen ravishing fragments of it over the years, most often at ABT—would look utterly spontaneous, a vision that arose on the spur of the moment.

CriticalDance.com - Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo at Lincoln Center Review
The longest piece, "Les Sylphides," came first and was the one that they packed with the most humor.
There were the jumps that land too hard, gum chewing in the corps, movements that are too angular or too quick to be graceful, prima ballerinas who trip over corps members and who lose their placing on stage.
Judging from the laughter throughout the crowd, the audience loved "Les Sylphides." Yet, I find that I like the Trocks best when they cut down the slapstick humor and play it straight…so to speak.

Sensing the desire in the West for exotic Russian themes, Russian choreographer Mikhail Fokine created the abstract ballet, Les Sylphides (1909); the fast-paced Russian fairy tale, The Firebird (1910); and the highly theatrical Petrushka (1911).
Nijinsky's dances, such as his scandalous L'aprés-midi d'un faune in 1911 (right) and Le sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) in 1912 broke away from classical technique.
Le sacre du printemps, which combined eroticism and a powerful score by Stravinsky, caused riots at its première in Paris in 1913.

Les Ballets Trockadero's first performances were in 1974 in an off-off-off Broadway loft run by the West Side Discussion Group, and, despite the spoofing nature of the performance, New Yorker critic Arlene Croce wrote a thoughtful and appreciative critical response that eventually led to more mainstream success.

One of the first classical ballets to break from the tradition of narrative and attempt to create and indeed, inhabit, a more metaphysical poetic terrain, Les Sylphides is as captivating and startling today as it was when originally created by Michel Fokine in 1908.
In its emphasis on mood over story, evocation over description, and impressionistic reverie over characterization, the work anticipates the modern era's more explicit concerns with abstraction and formal invention.

Kirk Peterson, the ABT ballet master who brought back “Les Sylphides” as the company had performed it when he was a principal dancer in the 1970’s, has emphasized the elements of pantomime as well as the structural detail, and the return of tenderness in the port de bras for the corps, especially, is very welcome.
ABT’s dancers, who have extraordinary gifts yet who also tend to play to the audience, to (as one observer put it) comment on their own performances as they give them, are chastened in this ballet.
Peterson currently on view is in his production of “Les Sylphides.”
