  Dangerous Liaisons - Valmont omni
Because the story of Les Liaisons Dangereuses unfolds entirely via letters written among the characters with no omniscient author intervention, the novel offers great subjectivity of interpretation -- not only about who should be considered the protagonists and who the villains, but about the significance of events and even, in some cases, what actually happened.
Hampton's play Les Liaisons Dangereuses ends with the shadow of the guillotine falling across the stage, though in the moment, Merteuil plays chess and enjoys the return of her control.
If the various versions of Les Liaisons Dangereuses offer any clear any message, it is that what people do influences their reputations less than what they say and what is said about them by others.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos ds Laclos has been made into a film no less than three times in the States (Dangerous Liaisons, Cruel Intentions, Valmount) and once in Europe (Liasions Dangereuses).
This role was among her first, she was only 18 at the time the movie was shot.
Rather than keeping to period music some points of the movie are punctuated with music that would be more at home in a 1930’s film noir.

Also, the movie version starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich is wonderful as well--but of course, I recommend reading the novel first.
Some readers have proposed tragedy as the appropriate category for Les Liaisons, where fate is exceedingly brutal to the protagonists and shatters all possibility of redemption of life.
I had seen the great film Dangerous Liaison's, so I was drawn to reading the original sourse material, I was at first taken aback by its being an epistolary novel, but I got used to that in short order and really enjoyed the book.

Chicago Reader Movie Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
In the case of Les liaisons dangereuses, which consists of 175 letters written by about a dozen characters, the problems are even more intractable.
All four movies start off as if they intend to be just as scary as the novel but then wind up simplifying the issues, either by letting a doomed sympathetic character survive (as in Cruel Intentions) or by sentimentalizing the motives or the fates of the more evil characters (as in the other three movies).
It isn't as good as Clueless, but just as that teen movie did a better job with Jane Austen than all the supposedly legit screen adaptations of her novels that flanked it, Cruel Intentions is less presumptuous than the efforts of Vadim, Frears, and Forman, which were all presented as prestigious cultural objects.

Christopher Hampton’s dramatization of Choderlos de Laclos’ LES LIAISION DANGEREUSES was the only Broadway production where I departed at intermission (I refer to the acclaimed British import of the late 1980s); at the time, I thought Mr.
Hampton turned the novel into a Regency romp, peppered with elementary innuendos, with the villains brought center stage to be chuckled over while the young lovers are reduced to ninnies and the wife, a whining pill.

In Dangerous Liaisons, meanwhile, it's clear that Valmont is an evil guy who did exactly one non-evil thing in his life--falling in love--and who managed to turn that into something despicable, too.
I'm puzzled by films like this one and the Mansfield Park of a couple of years ago that are based so loosely on the novels they supposedly depict as to constitute outright inversions of the ideas behind the books.

In between “chance” meetings with de Tourvel in which Valmont slowly, methodically breaks down her will, he enjoys debauched “instructional” dalliances with the innocent — but eager — Cécile (a delightful Louisa Krause) in order to prepare, or more accurately, ruin her for her betrothed, who just happens to be the jilted Merteuil’s despised ex.
Also caught in the cross fire of Valmont and Merteuil’s fiercely complex and witty game of one-upmanship is Le Chevalier Danceny (Jeff Barry), a love struck simpleton who is willing to fight to the death to defend Cécile’s honor yet becomes an unknowing pawn captivated and controlled by Merteuil’s ample charms.
While this production of “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” lacks the ultimately heartbreaking character development that the John Malkovich-Glenn Close-Michelle Pfeiffer movie “Dangerous Liaisons” provided, it gleefully drips with vindictiveness

Synopsis: DANGEROUS LIAISONS is Roger Vadim's original film version of Choderlos de Laclos's scandalous 18th-century novel transposed to a modernized setting to create an unforgettable portrait of a decadent society.
Jeanne Moreau and Gérard Philipe play Valmont and Juliette, two equally beautiful and equally cruel married hipsters scouring the smoky and chic underworld of beatnik-tinged 1960 Paris for their next amorous victims.
Vadim’s transposition of the casual cruelties and excruciatingly subtle protocols of 18th-century French court life is uncannily accurate, and the director brings themes developed in his earlier masterpiece, AND GOD CREATED WOMAN, to a sophisticated crescendo of visual and psychological eroticism, romance, and ennui.
