glbtq >> literature >> Novel: Lesbian
More broadly, lesbian novels, by questioning gender norms, debating what it means to be a woman in our society, and questioning dominant values, have not only depicted the lesbian community but also helped to constitute it.
As important as authorship in defining the lesbian novel is audience reception; although the audience does not have to be exclusively lesbian, the book should have particular appeal for lesbians.
A thorough discussion of all important lesbian novels is beyond the scope of this brief essay, but I shall at least mention many of the most significant lesbian novels of the twentieth century.

AfterEllen.com - FOX Reveals Inconsistent Policy on Lesbian Kisses   (Site not responding. Last check: )
But the only kiss on FOX between an actual lesbian member of the cast and another lesbian was the 2000 kiss between Dark Angel's Original Cindy and ex-girlfriend Diamond (Tangelia Rouse), a one-time guest character who died tragically and painfully at the end of the episode.
This inconsistent policy towards lesbian kisses isn't only practiced by FOX, of course: on every network television channel, you are far more likely to see lesbian kisses between guest lesbian characters, straight women, or a straight and gay woman than between lesbian characters who are part of the cast.
In its entire ten-year reign, for example, NBC's Friends showed four lesbian kisses, only one of which was between lesbians (and it wasn't even between the show's long-running lesbian couple, who were never actually allowed to kiss on-screen, even at their own wedding).

Lesbian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sappho, the eponym of lesbianism, is thought to have had a complex love life — some ancient accounts describe her as having love affairs with men as well; while one ancient source, Maximus of Tyre, claimed that her relationships with the girls in her school were purely platonic.
There is a growing body of research and writing on lesbian sexuality, which has brought some debate about the control women have over their sexual lives, the fluidity of female-to-female sexuality, the redefinition of female sexual pleasure and the debunking of negative sexual stereotypes.
The relationship between lesbianism and lesbian-identified transgender or transsexual women who identify as lesbian has been a turbulent one, with historically negative attitudes, but this seemed to be changing by the close of the twentieth century.

 On Lesbian Poetry
Lesbian is also the essential outsider, woman alone and integral, who is oppressed and despised by traditional society, yet thereby free to use her position, to reform and remember.
In her 1993 study of the political uses and institutionalization of lesbian poetry, Sagri Dhairyam elaborates on the poets' participatory role in the creation of communal lesbian identity: "[The lesbian] poet is not only the person who creates a literary text, but overlaps with the person who reads, who participates in a ritual for identity.
Rich argues that it is the "lesbian" in every woman that is the creative force, opposing this figurative creative "lesbian" to the "hack" writer who is "the dutiful daughter of the fathers," the character whom all women are socialized to become (Rich, 1976, 201).

 Discovery Health :: Lesbian
Lesbian refers to a woman whose primary emotional and sexual relationships are with other women.
The term is derived from Lesbos, the Mediterranean island that was the birthplace of Sappho, a 6th century BC female poet and devotee of the goddess Aphrodite.
Like the term gay, lesbian is often used to refer to self-identified "out of the closet" women, rather than all women who engage in same-sex sexual behavior.

Yet, the single event most likely to speed the day when it is politically and socially acceptable to openly discuss the broad relevance of this fast-solidifying scientific consensus that biology plays an important role in human behavior would be a public donnybrook between gay men and lesbian-feminists over nature vs. nurture.
