The purpose of the group is to identify and promote lesbian issues and perspectives while empowering lesbians to become experienced organizers who can participate in political rebellion.
Emphasis is placed highly on turning energy into action, and using that energy constructively against heterosexist, homophobic, heteronormative, classist, racist, sexist, and generally oppressive forces and institutions in society and the lesbian community.
Each chapter of the Lesbian Avengers works in collaboration on major events like the annual Dyke March and larger, national protests, as well as in coalition with other progressive groups in their communities.

Sarah Schulman was the first lesbian I knew by name, because when I arrived at college in 1986 she came to read from the first of her five novels, and my dormmate Mark reported on the rather mythic event to me later that night.

She thinks that lesbians should be out, that individual white women should refuse the access of being tokens for an entire community, that gay literature needs to become a true crossover category, and that the art ghetto itself is unhealthy.

In the fall of 1993, the New York Lesbian Avengers went to Lewiston, Maine to work with local lesbian and gay activists against the Christian Right initiative to repeal Lewiston's anti-discrimination ordinance.
What we didn't know was that this organization was alienating many lesbians and gay men in the town by asking them to stay in the closet and by giving them no political input or decision-making power.
