  Lesbian
Indeed, the lesbian vampire is much more apparent in her homoerotic desire for other females, either in her choice of victims or her choice in other vampires whom she takes as lovers.
As Weiss argues, “the lesbian vampire is at once attractive and threatening to men, in part because she expresses an active sexual desire” (Weiss, 1993: 90).
This indicates that the relationship between the female lesbian vampire and her victim is mutually desirable and setting it clearly within a sexual context.

But rather than cataloging the various appearances of the lesbian in all of her manifestations, whether shrouded in codes and innuendo or out and proud, Weiss is more interested in posing some of the available images (the violet, the vampire) against the overwhelming INvisibility of the lesbian on celluloid.
The lesbian vampire is "the most persistent lesbian image in the history of the cinema" (84), a fact that demands her serious consideration.
The lesbian vampire clearly functions as an embodiment of male heterosexual fear of female sexuality gone out of control; she is always punished and vanquished by the end of the narrative.

With all the interest people have in vampires nowadays, I was really upset to learn how little there was on the Internet about queer vampires.
Not that the vampire was necessarily same-sex oriented, but more that he was free to follow his own path.
While the average villiager screamed that the vampire was immoral and evil, he still exuded power and raw sensuality.

Earlier images of the lesbian vampire include: the Countess Bathory, whose sadistic murders of more than 600 young women is thought by some to have had some sexual motive; the fertility goddesses for whom sexuality was a sacred act; and the female demons such as Lilith who seduced young women into their “evil” ways.
Vampires are representative of a number of different belief systems, but the vampire, more than anything else, represents the forbidden and taboo: life without death; killing without guilt; cannibalism in the form of blood drinking; sensuality and eroticism without reproduction or responsibility.
Vampires are as diverse in the actions and opinions as humans are—some are bad, some are good, some are short, some are tall.

The chapter on lesbian vampires reflects this position of seeking opposition in outwardly repressive images.
Perhaps not surprisingly, then, Weiss suggests that it is within the avant-garde and experimental mode that lesbian film is most often successful in dismantling the heterosexual male gaze and heterosexist assumptions more common in narrative and documentary films.

Lesbians have received their fair share of representation in Hollywood versions of the European vampire legend, from the ominous assault of artist’s models in Dracula’s Daughter (1936) to the whacked-out Daughters of Darkness (1971) to the super stylish seduction by Catherine Deneuve in The Hunger (1983).
When a movie purports itself to be about lesbian vampires, but only involves a sadistic female character that likes to take the beauty and innocence of women, sucking away these qualities through their blood after making out with them, this is not a lesbian movie.
Even the vampire proclaims that if she knew she (the bisexual wife) was married, she would not have agreed to meet her.

 FFWD Weekly - June 10, 2004
Many films about female vampires (regardless of sexual orientation, if such a thing actually exists among the undead) are derived from two sources: the 19th century vampire novel Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, and the Elizabeth Bathory legend.
Daughters of Darkness (1971): This is a marvellously atmospheric and original art-house favourite that floats along at a leisurely pace and refuses to rehash clichés of the vampiric genre.
The Vampire Lovers (1970): Hammer studios started their famous and popular "Carmilla trilogy" – consisting of this film, Lust for a Vampire (1971), and Twins of Evil (1971) – with this rather daring erotic adaptation of Le Fanu’s Carmilla.

An invention of the nineteenth-century, the artistic vampire, as opposed to the vampire of folklore, is connected not with disease but with sexuality.
For authors, artists, and filmmakers, artistic vampires represent a common sexualized metaphor--the release of insurgent passion and emotion--that includes such details as the erotic foreplay of vampires' attacks and the creatures' dependency on the bodily fluid of their victims.
Early vampire cinema is remarkably heterosexist, belying the literary tradition that spawned it.
