Lesbigay Youth: Growing Up In the 90's - Part 1
Lesbigay youths are facing some difficult decisions in their future as the struggle towards equality persists.
A second important factor in lesbigay youth acceptance and coming out is the reactions of parents to the fact that their son or daughter is gay, lesbian or bisexual.
Lesbigay youths are therefore placed in a confusing array of social situations whichdemand they choose their actions within select social circumstances.

David M. Skover & Kellye Y. Testy, LesBiGay Identity as Commodity
This Essay explores the deep dissonance that exists today between the validation of American LesBiGays in the commercial marketplace and their devaluation in political and legal arenas, and questions the failure of legal scholars and civil rights activists to account meaningfully for this dissonance in their theories and practices.
Thus, there is a deep dissonance between the validation of LesBiGay identities in the economic marketplace of items and ideas, and their devaluation in the legal arena of rights and remedies.
Surprisingly, this schizoid treatment of LesBiGay identity is largely ignored or misunderstood by legal theorists and practitioners.

Les-Bi-Gay and Transgender Glossary (Bisexual Resource Center Pamphlet)
Concepts and attitudes toward gender identity and sexual identity are changing in society as a whole, as well as within the LesBiGay and Transgender communities (including reclaiming derogatory slang.) Therefore, the meanings of these words will continue to change as well.
The assumptions that identifying as heterosexual and having sexual and romantic attractions only to members of another gender or sex is good and desirable, that other sexual identities and attractions are bad and unacceptable, and that anyone whose sexual identity is not known is heterosexual.
Derogatory terms used by homophobes toward heterosexuals who (are perceived to) associate with lesbigays: queer lover, queer bait, and (woman who associates with gay men) fag hag.

Thus we see the growing economic importance of gay consumers and workers in capitalism, outpacing and destroying the cold-war hegemony of conservative ethical and religious morals.
Some have argued that this deconstruction of sexual orientation and gender serves the political interests of the right-wing, preserving male and heterosexist hegemony while undermining women's voices and progressive politics.
As LesBiGay studies have often relied on sexual orientation/sexual identity as a fundamental category, queer theory attempts to destablize this "bedrock," revealing the power structures and discursive limits within.

In 1992, a group of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LesBiGay) UWC graduates founded the UWC LesBiGay Network.
We believed that the UWC was failing to recognise and educate its members about the intolerance faced by LesBiGay men and women world-wide, and we hoped to affect change and promote tolerance of differences in sexual orientation by providing support for LesBiGay members and providing information on issues of sexuality to the wider community.
The LesBiGay Network publishes a newsletter called Facts of Life (see the FOL Index Page) discussing UWC-related and international news, and has prepared material for workshops on "UWCs and sexuality" and "homophobia" at several colleges.
