During half-time of a high-interest basketball game between Yugoslavia and Germany on 1st of July 1999, spectators of the local state-owned "TV Leskovac" were shocked when TV technician of that station surprisingly and unexpectedly appeared on the screens of their TV sets.
Leskovac was traditionally labeled as the "red city" by the rest of the country.
The verbal attack of the TV technician was not only the attack against local regime, but also attack against the head of the state and his regime, for the first time done in that manner.

The 20,000 protestors who gathered on Monday in Leskovac, a town in southern Serbia of only 70,000 people, urging their president to resign, did so in response to a statement read out over local television during the break between two halves of a crucial European championship match involving the national team in France on Friday.
Before the NATO bombing campaign and before several hundred young men from Leskovac were sent to fight in Kosovo, the town had been one of the strongest bastions of support for the Milosevic and his ruling Socialist Party.
People in Leskovac now say that they took on NATO because of the stupidity of their authorities and that the price that they have paid has been too high.

The principal object of the reservists' frustration here in Leskovac is Zivojin Stefanovic, the local chairman of the Socialist Party, who runs this down-at-the-heels textile town of 170,000.
It was his house that reservists smashed up on Tuesday night, and it was his resignation that remains a non-negotiable demand of their demonstrations, which are scheduled to go on until he quits or is fired.

On January 21, in Leskovac, the Offences Board upheld a decision under Article 69 of the Republic Information Act under which Nesic was fined 70,000 dinars and imprisoned for 30 days for an article, To Write Like All Normal People, published in issue five the Rights of Man.

Even before NATO launched air strikes against Yugoslavia, Leskovac and Vranje, two towns in southern Serbia, were notorious for the way in which the authorities stamped out dissent.
Vranje and Leskovac are two of the poorest towns in Serbia - the average salary before the war was a meagre 50 German Marks ($27) a month - and state television has always been the principal, if not the only, medium.
Dobrosav Nesic was released from Leskovac prison on June 7 after serving a one-month sentence that was imposed on him on January 21 in accordance with the law on public information.

Leskovac, April 12 (South News) - NATO's terror over civilians has reached a new high today when the international passenger train No. 393, travelling from Belgrade to Thessalonika, Greece, was bombed.
Leskovac Railway Station chief Radonja Pantic said the NATO missile had hit the second coach, destroying it completely.
The train left Leskovac, southern Serbia, at 11:25 a.m., the station chief said, adding the train was hit while crossing the Bistrica Bridge in Grdelicka Klisura gorge.

It was erected between 1906 and 1908 according to the design of an architect Svetozar Jovanovic Senior.
During the 60's Leskovac got a new and spacious building for the museum which enabled the city to exhibit its valuable archaeological collection from the Iustiniana Prima site, undoubtedly one of the most significant early Byzantine sites on the Balkans, which stared to be investigated between the two wars.
The best examples from the collection are being exhibited in the ground floor gallery, whereas other valuable parts of the collection and other collections are deposited and are only exhibited occasionally.

On the third day of protests in Leskovac, Bojana Ristic announced that SRM will take on itself the organization of the rallies because legally the citizens are not allowed to register a gathering with the authorities.
Only at the beginning of this week when MC Bata was arrested after trying to "register a rally with the authorities" and when Ms Ristic received six citations on the same occasion, it turned out that the rallies were not registered with the authorities, although "they were also not banned".
The Democratic Party also offered assistance to the Leskovac protests during the first days but were warned not to set up their PA system "because it was to be confiscated and all members of the local party organization arrested".
